How Eastern Washington Cannabis Growers Weathered This Year's Fire Season

During the final, fire-scorched days of August, Jeremy Moberg of CannaSol Farms slept on the roofs of houses and trailers in order to monitor the wildfires that were working their way around his land in Okanogan County. “So many people left and didn’t want to deal,” he says, including a few of CannaSol’s employees. (He said they are no longer employed with the company.) When Moberg or any of his remaining tough-it-out neighbors saw a fire getting too close to a house, they’d scramble onto their tractors and cut fire lines into the soil to protect it.

Medical marijuana to expand in Florida?

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -

Representatives from the governor’s office and state Legislature gathered Wednesday to hear Florida economist’s projections for revenue from a potential expansion of medical marijuana. They’re using data from 20 other states that have already legalized pot for medical use.

"Estimating how doctors will be involved and how they’ll treat this, and what people will do and the behavioral side of it is much harder, and that’s really what we’re looking to other states for," said Florida Chief Economist Amy Baker.

Potential revenue could shift either way based on what types of diseases are covered by medical marijuana.

Supporters said hundreds of millions of dollars could be at stake.

Oregon Speeds up Sales of Recreational Marijuana

On Thursday October 1, Oregon became the third state to make recreational marijuana legally available to those over the age of 21. The legalization occurred earlier than originally planned due to the complexity of the compromise involved in the legalization bill.

Oregon joins Washington and Colorado as the third state to legalize recreational marijuana, with Alaska and the District of Colombia to join the number soon. Oregon’s legislation has an interesting compromise, allowing cities where the majority of the residents oppose legalization to ban sales of marijuana all together.

Oregon becomes third U.S. state to allow recreational marijuana sales

Marijuana sales for recreational use began in Oregon on Thursday as it joined Washington state and Colorado in allowing the sale of a drug that remains illegal under U.S. federal law.

Oregon residents 21 years and older can buy up to a quarter-ounce (seven grams) of dried pot at roughly 200 existing medical-use marijuana dispensaries as a new law took effect.

Backers hope the law will help curb a flourishing black market, but opponents say it heightens drug use and access by children.

About 40 people lined up outside the medical pot dispensary Shango in a strip mall near Portland International Airport for the chance to buy recreational pot one minute after midnight, when the changes went into effect.

How Are New Drugs Evaluated by the FDA?

As a physician who works at the FDA, I get a lot of questions from my medical colleagues. Well, sometimes they are questions -- and other times they are merely venting frustrations. "Why don't you regulate drug prices? Why are there so many drug ads on television? What the heck is a biosimilar?"

But as more of my friends learn what I actually do, they've been asking me just how does the FDA make decisions on whether or not to approve a drug. Specifically, they want to know how many people are needed in clinical trials to make decisions on whether a drug works, and if it is safe. I don't know about you, but I don't think this was ever covered in a pharmacology class.

Results from medical cannabis trials in Georgia show early promise

Georgia-based clinical trials have shown early promise in using cannabis oil to treat epileptic seizures, although researchers said they won’t know for sure until at least the end of next year what strides they have made in the study of medical marijuana.

The update came Wednesday during the latest meeting of the state’s Commission on Medical Cannabis, formed earlier this year to study the effect of Georgia’s new medical marijuana law and whether it should be expanded to allow growers to harvest and distribute cannabis oil in-state.
