Cross-pressured voting and the failure of Ohio’s marijuana oligopoly

While some have claimed that last Tuesday’s defeat for Ohio’s Issue 3, which would have legalized recreational marijuana in the state, is an example of liberals losing the culture wars, the actual dynamics of this proposed amendment’s failure are far more nuanced, and may even tell the opposite story. Instead of serving as a defeat for liberals in the culture wars, the failure of this referendum shows what happens when voters are faced with multiple, competing concerns as part of the same issue.

Where Hillary Clinton's Marijuana Proposal Falls Short

Moving pot to Schedule II is weak tea compared to Bernie Sanders' support for repealing federal prohibition.

During an appearance in South Carolina on Saturday, Hillary Clintonsaid marijuana should be moved from Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act (CSA), the most restrictive category, to Schedule II, which is for drugs that have recognized medical applications but also "a high potential for abuse." Other Schedule II drugs include cocaine, methamphetamine, and oxycodone. Here is how the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee explained her position:

Hillary Clinton joins Democratic rivals on rescheduling marijuana

ORANGEBURG, S.C. — Hillary Rodham Clinton has long declined to endorse legalized medical or recreational marijuana at the federal level, but on Saturday, she added more specifics to her proposal to increase research into medical marijuana.

Clinton said that she supports removing marijuana from a list of Schedule I drugs, a classification that prevents federally-sponsored research into its effects. As a Schedule I drug, marijuana is classified among the most dangerous drugs that the federal Drug Enforcement Agency regulates.

“We haven’t done research, why? Because it’s considered a Schedule I drug,” Clinton said during a town hall meeting at Claflin University in South Carolina on Saturday. “I’d like to move it from Schedule I to Schedule II.”

Cannabis oil cures terminal cancer in three-year-old after pharmaceutical drugs fail miserably

A 3 year-old Utah boy, diagnosed with leukemia and told by doctors that he had mere days to live, is now alive and well not because he continued his chemotherapy, but because he obtained cannabis oil treatment instead. (1)

The family, fed up with the fact that the only treatment doctors could recommend was chemotherapy--even after little Landon Riddle kept vomiting dozens of times daily and refused to eat after two months of chemo--looked into cannabis oil treatment. After reading up about it online and researching the details, they traveled to Colorado where such a treatment is legal, to help Landon. (1)

Flandreau area residents against marijuana plan relieved

FLANDREAU, S.D. - After growing a marijuana crop worth millions, the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe has decided to suspend its marijuana program.
Tribal attorney Seth Pearman says tribal leaders decided to destroy their current crop and pause production until the tribe can get in contact with the u.s. department of justice.

Since the tribe announce in June that it wanted to legalize marijuana and sell it on the reservation, people have been coming forward, questioning whether or not that's a good idea. And now after Saturday's announcement, many people say they are celebrating the decision.

“Thank God there's an answer to prayer", Flandreau resident, Bart Sample sighed.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -

"Gas and Grass" is the first gas station to open in Colorado Springs that's adjacent to a Native Roots medical marijuana dispensary.

Colorado does not allow pot shops to sell non-marijuana products. So, the gas station and pot shop have distinct entrances. However, medical marijuana patients that shop at Native Roots will get discounts on the gasoline, similar to a grocery store loyalty program.

Patients who register their medical card with Native Roots will receive a free tank of gas, as well as discount card with substantial gas discounts for each subsequent visit, regardless of purchase- .15 per gallon

Legalized marijuana won't save Indian reservations

You know what our most impoverished, crime-ridden, ill-educated communities in the country need? More drugs.

On Tuesday, the Seneca Nation in Western New York voted to consider growing and selling medical marijuana on its territory. Other Indians tribes are going to follow suit. Thanks to a new ruling by the Justice Department, tribes can now distribute marijuana, irrespective of the policy of the state in which they’re located.

Perhaps this sounds familiar. It’s how we got Indian casinos. The 1998 Indian Gaming Regulation Act (IGRA) cemented the notion that Indian lands were sovereign and answerable only to the federal government, not the state governments, with regard to gambling.
