Small part of Iowa votes to legalize medical, rec marijuana

Leaders of the Omaha Tribe in Nebraska are considering land in western Iowa for growing marijuana.

The Sioux City Journal newspaper reports tribal members approved three referendums Tuesday giving the Tribal Council the authority to legalize marijuana for medicinal and recreational use and to grow plants for industrial hemp.

Tribal Chairman Vernon Miller says a study will examine whether the business would make financial sense.

Miller says leaders will watch the performance of the Flandreau Santee Sioux's marijuana resort on its South Dakota reservation.

Miller says it's unclear whether the Omaha Tribe's casino, Blackbird Bend, could become a similar resort.

Miller says the tribe will ensure its efforts wouldn't violate federal or state laws.

LED technology courts pot growers

SEATTLE -- Seattle currently has 17 marijuana grow operations. There are 107 more waiting for approval. If all of them start using Seattle's power grid to light up their plants, it would add more than 100-million kilowatt hours of demand.

That's equal to powering 12,288 single family homes or four buildings the size of the Columbia Center.

It's budding new ideas among growers, now turning to LED.

"You could target the kind of light the plant wants," said David Bajorins.

Bajorins is director of operations for CSA Seattle. They test LED technology and recently expanded as business grows. Part of that growth is horticulture.

New LED options offer specific light for specific plant results.

How to Invest in the Legalization of Marijuana

The highs and lows of planting Cannabis stocks in your portfolio

Although Ohioans voted against legalizing recreational and medical marijuana, investors are buzzing about marijuana stocks and the possibility of mega returns if more states join in.

Public sentiment is certainly leaning toward legalization. A recent poll by Gallup found that 58% of Americans believe the use of marijuana should be legalized, more than double the support the idea had in the mid-1990’s.

Poll: Georgia Voters Are Split On Marijuana Legalization

Georgia doesn’t have the harshest marijuana laws in America, but they are far from friendly. If you get caught with more than 1 ounce of marijuana in Georgia, it’s a felony, punishable by up to ten years in jail and a $5,000 fine. There is another felony charge if the marijuana was possessed with intent to distribute (any amount), which also carries another penalty of up to ten years in jail and a $5,000 fine. I don’t know what the police are like in Georgia, but in most states law enforcement is quick to make the determination that there was intent to distribute, so I’d imagine often times those charges go together when people get caught.

Heroin top U.S. drug threat; "Ferguson effect" real: DEA chief

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Heroin use has been exploding in the United States in recent years and on Wednesday federal officials said that for the first time it was viewed as posing the greatest U.S. drug threat.

In an annual assessment by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, heroin was ranked the No. 1 problem by the largest portion of local and state law enforcement agency authorities taking part, said DEA head Chuck Rosenberg.

Methamphetamine was ranked the top drug threat in 2014, and controlled prescription drugs was top in 2013, according to the DEA.

WASHINGTON (Nov. 4, 2015) - The O'Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law at Georgetown Law, in collaboration with the Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA), has received a $250,000 grant from the Open Philanthropy Project to help develop guidelines on how states, countries, and other jurisdictions that opt to legalize cannabis for medical or recreational purposes can create regulatory frameworks, consistent with the goals of legalization, that will work effectively to protect and promote the public health.

Legal Clash Exposes Contradictions in Fed's Pot-Banking Rules

The Federal Reserve System has a clear stance on when banks are allowed to serve the legal-marijuana industry: it's never OK to do business with pot companies, except when it is.

That, at least, is the confusing message that emerges from comparing the Federal Reserve Board's tolerance of the practice with the hard line taken by one of the system's regional banks in a legal dispute with a Colorado credit union.

'Concussion' doctor aiding marijuana-based research company

The doctor portrayed in the upcoming football movie ''Concussion'' is on the board of a company looking for a marijuana-based treatment for head injuries.

Bennet Omalu was recently named to the scientific advisory board of Kannalife Sciences, which has been developing marijuana-based products to treat the effects of concussions.

Omalu conducted the autopsy on former Steelers center Mike Webster that led to the discovery of chronic traumatic encephalopathy or CTE. The concussion-related disease has been found in the brains of a number of former NFL players during autopsies.
