Cannabis At Work: Dealing With The Stigma

I'm an HR pro by trade and I recently went to an employment law seminar. The topic? The implications of medical marijuana in the workplace.

The speaker who opened the session was a lawyer, and let's just say he didn't present medical marijuana in an objective, balanced light. Quite the opposite, really.

He began by saying there were more marijuana dispensaries in Vancouver than Starbucks, a story Civilized covered recently. The jury's out on whether that's true or not.

Medical marijuana proposal in peril as pro-pot group suffers from infighting in Wyoming

CASPER, Wyo. — Infighting within a group pursuing a medical marijuana ballot initiative in Wyoming could make the daunting process of gathering enough signatures this winter even more difficult, with the group's newly resigned executive director saying the effort is already in jeopardy.

On Sunday, Jackson resident Chris Christian quit the Wyoming chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, which has been working on legalization issues for years and hired an attorney to draft the Peggy A. Kelley Wyoming Cannabis Act of 2016.

In addition to medical marijuana, the proposal would legalize industrial hemp.

“Taking this on was like herding jackrabbits uphill in a snowstorm,” Christian said Monday.

Medical marijuana battle continues in Florida

BOCA RATON, Fla. —Now that the state of Florida has chosen five nurseries to begin growing and distributing a weak form of marijuana, patients are counting the days until they can use it.

Joey Jones, of Boca Raton, just underwent his second surgery for brain cancer. His surgeries were in California were he said he used medical marijuana to ease his pain and help his appetite.

"It's also controlled my seizures, too, which is a huge part," Jones said. "I only had one seizure which revealed my tumor and I haven't had any seizures since."

Jones recently moved to Florida so his family can help him recover.

Colorado water right to grow marijuana?

Can Colorado issue a water right to irrigate marijuana plants when federal law still says that growing pot is a crime? That’s the question being asked by a division engineer and a water referee in Div. 5 water court in Glenwood Springs in response to a water rights application filed by High Valley Farms, LLC.

“Even though the cultivation of marijuana and the sale of marijuana is legal in the state of Colorado, because it is still not legal under federal law, this question is still out there — whether beneficial use includes any use that is not legal under federal law,” said Alan Martellaro, the division engineer in Div. 5.

Martellaro said a water right in Colorado can only be issued if the water is being put to a beneficial use, such as irrigation.

This Chef Makes Stoners’ Dreams Come True With Cannabis Cuisine

We’ve all had a terrible edible experience at least once in our lives.

Fooled by the overall deliciousness of the treat, you eat the whole damn thing and end up getting way too high. I’m talking about the way-too-high-to-be-outside-right-now type of high. That sh*t ain’t fun, man.

Miguel Trinidad is the man who’s changing that. As head chef and owner of NYC’s first Filipino gastropub, Jeepney, he’s reinventing the edible game with marijuana meals that will blow your mind.

Omaha Tribe of Nebraska interested in growing marijuana

MACEY, Neb. —About an hour and half north of the city of Omaha, the Omaha Tribe of Nebraska sits on 300 square miles of reservation land stretching into Iowa's Monona County.

"We need jobs," Daniel Webster said, who lives on the reservation.

KETV reports, historical issues such as poverty and unemployment have reached critical levels.

"Right now, my community has a 69 percent unemployment rate," Omaha Tribe of Nebraska chairman Vernon Miller said.

Miller said the dire economy is leading to desperate solutions.

"We're not seeing anybody else looking to assist us and we acknowledge that, so we're trying to pursue whatever we can," Miller said.
