Legal Marijuana May Become A Reality in California Next Year

In the 1990's, California's decision to legalize medical marijuana put it at the forefront of pro-pot policy. However, California's failure to pass recreational marijuana legislation in 2010 led to it taking a backseat to other states when it comes to reforming recreational marijuana laws.

Today, four states and the District of Columbia have legalized recreational pot and the experiences in those states, including better-than-hoped tax revenue in Colorado and Washington, and an increasingly laissez-faire attitude toward marijuana nationally, could mean that California is about to embrace recreational marijuana in 2016.

Ball State undergrad arrested for possessing marijuana, sues school for suspending him

MUNCIE, Ind. (December 4, 2015) - A Ball State student is suing the federal government and the university.

Bronson Westbrook, 24, was arrested in 2014 and charged with possession of marijuana. During that arrest, more than $14,000 in cash was confiscated. Police say that money was collected from selling drugs.

“As far as I know he’s a good guy and he comes over and cuts his mom’s yard,” said Westbrook’s neighbor Tino Edwards.

Neighbors in Westbrook’s south side Muncie neighborhood didn’t know him to be much of a trouble maker. A few blocks away though on March 2, 2014, Westbrook was involved in a car accident. Police say that’s when they found more than 24 grams of marijuana on him and more than $14,000 in cash-- some hidden under the driver’s seat.

Alaska Marijuana committee iffy about excise taxes

Sitka’s marijuana advisory committee doesn’t want to impose excise taxes on the now-legal drug – at least, not right now. While no firm recommendations were made at a meeting earlier this week, several members spoke in support of leaving taxes off the table.

The Committee is mulling over an excise tax on marijuana and related-products, like edibles. Excise taxes are fees levied on the process of getting the product to the store counter, generally paid to a city or municipality by a wholesaler.

Driving While Stoned: New Breathalyzer Device Sniffs Out Marijuana

A Gallup survey from March 2015 revealed that 18.9 million Americans, ages 12 and over, used marijuana within the month prior to the survey. Already four states—Washington, Oregon, Colorado and Alaska—and the District of Columbia have passed measures legalizing marijuana, and an additional 14 states have decriminalized some amounts of possession of the substance.

“At the same time that marijuana use is growing dramatically, law enforcement has been impeded by the lack of tools to help identify stoned drivers and get them off the road,” according to the company Hound Labs.

Now, the company is claiming they’ve created a technology capable of detecting THC (tetrahyedrocannabinol) levels below 500 pg in a breathalyzer test.
