Don't demonise ganja - Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Joseph Gordon-Levitt has argued that cannabis use is "overly demonised" by society.

The 34-year-old actor has been open about smoking marijuana in the past and now argues it shouldn't be stigmatised. Although he isn't encouraging others to follow in his footsteps, the star wants people to make an informed decision about the drug.

"Even though the tide is turning, I think marijuana is overly demonised in our culture," he told Playboy magazine.

"I do know people who let it get out of control and let it play a part in their lives that's not beneficial. There's definitely an addictive quality, but it's psychological. It's not physically addictive in the way cigarettes or alcohol are physically addictive."

Colorado suspended tax collections on marijuana for one day on Wednesday, and pot cultivation operations said the tax holiday was saving them tens of thousands of dollars behind the scenes.

"My space will all be empty today," said Daniel Morgan, grow operator for the Starbuds chain, as he stood before a 30-pound mound of pot in a north Denver warehouse. "We're just sending it to all the stores."

Morgan says he hopes to move up to 100 pounds of marijuana by the end of day Wednesday, which would mean $30,000 in savings.

The history of medical cannabis is long and turbulent, encompassing almost every corner of the globe and spanning over 6,000 years. Here, we set out what we believe are the most significant milestones on the long march to gain recognition of cannabis as a powerful, effective, and safe medicine.

Publication of the Sanskrit Ayurvedic texts

Unlike the dates of many early Chinese texts, the Ancient Indians were fairly proactive when it came to dating their historical records, and as a result modern scholars are fairly confident that the first known references to cannabis appear in the Atharvaveda, written in around 1,400 BCE.

Stoners Are Pissed Off About a Study Claiming That the Munchies Might Be Causing Diabetes

You'll never guess what: some study that claims to show links between prolonged cannabis usage and prediabetes has been slammed by pro-cannabis campaigners. I know, right?

The study, conducted by the University of Minnesota on more than 3,000 Americans, reported that 65 percent of regular cannabis users are at higher risk of developing the sugary disease, while those who have used it "more than a hundred times" had a 50 percent higher chance of getting it. While no biological link between the two has been found, there is a suspicion that the diabetes is brought on by the munchies.

Teen marijuana use down despite greater availability

Concerns abound over whether laws legalizing pot for medical, recreational use will get drug into hands of more young people

Marijuana use among American high school students is significantly lower today than it was 15 years ago, despite the legalization in many states of marijuana for medical purposes, a move toward decriminalization of the drug and the approval of its recreational use in a handful of places, new research suggests.
