Mom Believes Marijuana Plant Oil Can Help Kids With Epilepsy

Each morning, Kim Hearn attaches a feeding tube to her son before outfitting him in specialized clothes that lend support to his torso, ankles and legs. A seizure often disrupts the process. It's a rigorous routine for this Stratford mom but it's nothing, she says, compared to what the 10-year-old, who can't speak or sit on his own, endures: "Sean just accepts it."

As a baby, Sean was diagnosed with Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome, a form of epilepsy. A dozen medications have failed to reduce the 30-plus seizures Sean experiences every day. Each episode is damaging to the boy, already frail. Hearn believes there could be an answer: an oil made from marijuana plants called Charlotte's Web.

Growers And Officials Struggle Over Making Pot Farms Environmentally Friendly in California

ARCATA, California – From the air, the so-called Emerald Triangle looks disconcertingly yellow. Such is the view as pilot Mark Harris tilts his 1957 Cessna 182 at a dizzying angle to get a better view of the rolling California landscape stretching below him.

Harris, an Arcata attorney, often uses his single-prop plane to hop from one county courthouse to the next. But today he’s getting a bird’s eye view of the marijuana farms that dot the forested hills around Upper Redwood Creek in Humboldt County, an area that’s part of the three-county Emerald Triangle region known far and wide for the quantity and quality of its marijuana.

Couple treats dogs's seizures with cannabis oil

Ari and Weizy aren't exactly lap dogs. They love to run and play. But their owners, J.C. and Angie Jenkins, said their dogs weren't always this healthy.

"One night we came home and his head was bobbling. He had no muscle control and he was really dizzy," J.C. Jenkins said.

Their veterinarian diagnosed Weizy, and later Ari, with partial grand mal seizures.

A host of drugs later, the Jenkinses said pills only made the dogs worse. They didn't know what to do until they saw a CNN special about cannabis oil helping a young girl with her seizures.

"So, we were like, 'Well, it works on people, right?" J.C. Jenkins said.

J.C. Jenkins used his medical marijuana card to buy some of the oil and now they give the dogs a dose in the morning and one at night.

Will Denver Okay a Two-Year Moratorium on New Pot Businesses?

The Denver City Council could put a hold on new marijuana dispensaries this week as it considers a two-year moratorium on medical marijuana businesses and a two-year extension on dispensary license transitions.

If both are approved when the council's Business Development Committee meets on Tuesday, only medical marijuana dispensaries open since October 2013 and in good standing with the city could apply for a license to sell retail marijuana for the next two years, while new medical marijuana dispensaries would be prohibited for the same amount of time — essentially freezing out any new dispensaries, medical or recreational.

Health Insurance Snubs Medical Marijuana For The Wrong Reasons

Charlotte Figi was still a baby when she experienced her first grand mal seizure. By the time Charlotte turned two, she was taking seven different medications to combat the frequency and severity of her convulsions. In an attempt to curb her epilepsy, she was prescribed heavy and addictive barbiturates which had harsh side effects for adult patients, let alone a toddler.

To her parents' dismay, the medications only offered a temporary solution. The seizures always returned with a vengeance, no matter how many pills Charlotte took. It would transpire that Charlotte had developed Dravet Syndrome, a debilitating form of epilepsy.

U.S. hemp sales will reach $500M in 2015

Sales of hemp products will reach $500 million nationwide in 2015, according to a preliminary analysis by the Boulder-based Hemp Business Journal.

That's up 25 percent over 2014, when Americans bought about $400 million worth of such hemp-based products as clothing, cosmetics and building materials, the majority of which were imported into the U.S.

That's likely to change with the legalization of hemp farming, which became legal — again, after a 77-year prohibition — in 2014. Three states accounted for the majority of agricultural hemp in 2015: Colorado (leading the way with 2,000 acres in production) Tennesee (1,000 acres) and Kentucky (922 acres).
