Veterans push for medicinal marijuana

Texas veterans are pushing State lawmakers to legalize marijuana for certain medical uses.

The Corpus Christi chapter of "NORML", or the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, has joined with other like-minded groups to support the effort.

They call it "Operation Trapped", so named because they feel veterans are trapped in a never ending system of pills prescribed to treat issues like Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and chronic pain.

Attorney Kyle Hoelscher runs NORMLCC, and says drugs like "Zoloft, Paxil, Prozac, and Xanax" come with serious side effects.

"It's (marijuana) an alternative that's safer, that has fewer negative side effects, but is completely banned by the VA," Hoelscher says.

How to Come Out of the Cannabis Closet to Your Parents - Leafly

The holidays are upon us once again. When classes are out and the work week breaks into vacation, many of you will be making a pilgrimage back home to parents and family. This time of the year always reminds me of the day I took my first step out of the cannabis closet by telling my parents – my conservative, religious parents – that I used cannabis.

Banking on the Marijuana Industry?

It is legal to sell marijuana in 23 states. But pot businesses can't deposit their money in banks because of federal banking laws. While the dilemma has been a back-burner issue in Congress for several years, a solution may be in the works.

A provision in the upcoming financial services spending bill would prevent the federal government from spending money on penalizing financial institutions that accept legal marijuana businesses as clients. That would greatly reduce the ability of federal agencies' to prosecute the banks.

Group wants vets with PTSD to have access to medical marijuana

SAN DIEGO – An organization is hoping to convince President Barack Obama to change the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ stance on medical marijuana for the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder.

“As a suicide survivor myself, it’s a subject that touches me,” said Sean Tiernan of Weed for Warriors Project.

Like tens of thousands before him, when Teirnan came back from combat, he was diagnosed with PTSD and found himself unable to cope.

“Basically, they want to medicate you and that’s causing a lot of issues,” said Tiernan.

Before discovering cannabis as a treatment for PTSD, he was prescribed a series of drug cocktails that he says did more harm than good. He says that’s when he knew he had to take action.

Company eyes Freetown land for medical marijuana facility

FREETOWN, Mass. —

Admittedly, it's not much to look at now. But one company says an empty lot in Freetown could become the leading facility in the world for pot.

"It's what we want as a town," said Planning Board Chairman Keven Desmarais.

The plan is a massive one: about 1 million square feet to grow and process medical marijuana at a state-of the-art facility indoors.

The company, AmeriCann Inc., won't actually sell any of the cannabis. But instead will lease the facility to licensed growers. The weed would only be used in Massachusetts, where voters overwhelmingly approved it for medical use in 2012.
