Checking cookies for cannabis could be challenging: Manitoba premier

Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister says he will consider closing a loophole that allows people to eat marijuana-infused brownies and other homemade edibles in public places when cannabis is federally legalized this year.

But he says enforcing a ban — such as one many other provinces are already planning — could be difficult.

"We talked with the RCMP and other policing authorities and there were concerns about how enforceable is it to have someone in a playground on the weekend, eating a cookie, and do you check to see if it's got cannabis or do you not? And how much does this cost, and all those questions," Pallister said Thursday.

"This is a moving target in some respects. We're going to try to get the rules as best we can to protect people."

Are cannabis drinks coming to Mississauga?

One example of this is a company from Toronto that has been creating cannabis-infused drinks.

It’s now working with wineries and breweries keen to try new technology.

Hill Street Beverage Co. is a producer of alcohol-free and cannabis-infused wines and beers. They are now looking to take it a step further. The company is partnering with Vin First Innovative Packaging, Cannabis Compliance Inc. and Lexaria Bioscience Corp. to refine its cannabis-infused drinks.

Health Canada has authorized Hill Street as a licensed dealer, so the company will be using Lexaria Biosciences Corp. technology to produce cannabis-infused beverages at Vin First’s facilities.

New clinic in region touts the benefits of medical marijuana: ON

Waterloo Medical Cannabis Clinic launches to meet the region’s growing demand for the product.

The inspiration for the newest cannabis clinic in the Waterloo Region came from Dave Schenk’s personal experience with the medicinal properties of the drug, slated to be legal for recreational use in July.

“I was relying on ibuprofen to get through the days from arthritis pain,” explained Schenk, a former investment banker who’s now manager of the Waterloo Medical Cannabis Clinic, part of The Clinic Network, which operates 10 medical marijuana centres across the country.

Newfoundland and Labrador’s Back Home Medical Cannabis Corp. becoming a reality thanks to investment from Biome Grow

Of the 104 existing Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations (ACMPR) licences in Canada, over 75 per cent are in either Ontario or British Columbia.
This means more than 50 per cent of Canadians don’t have access to locally produced cannabis products. With recreational cannabis legalization looming later this year, that could be viewed as a problem.

But for Biome Grow, an arm of Toronto-based Jacob Capital Management, it represents an opportunity in Atlantic Canada.

“We realized pretty early on … that being local will afford you certain privileges which supplying product out of Ontario will not,” says Khurram Malik, a Jacob Capital partner and its head of research. “What we like to do is build local ecosystems in the provinces we are in.

Goodbye counterculture: what will happen when weed goes corporate?

It is big corporations, not small independent producers, who will reap the benefits of cannabis legalization in Canada – but what will that mean for musicians and artists?

On a cool evening this past winter, Markham cannabis producer MedReleaf unveiled the first official branding for a legal recreational weed company at Toronto’s Opera House.

Cannabis will be great for business, especially the tech market

It is no secret that Canadians are looking forward to legalizing recreational marijuana, and Canadian entrepreneurs are simply blown away by the amount of money and opportunities this market is giving.

Canada is just a few weeks away from legalizing recreational cannabis, after having medical cannabis legal for over 15 years now. It is a good time to be an entrepreneur, especially if you are looking to start running a weed business in Canada.

Deloitte has recently published a survey which was focused on the legalization which is soon to happen, and how Canadians are going to behave once legal weed hits the streets.

City committee recommends allowing smoking of cannabis on sidewalks

Councillors still have chance to adapt bylaw in July meeting.

A city committee thinks Edmontonians should be allowed to smoke cannabis in outside public places like parks and sidewalks — as part of the new bylaw governing cannabis use.

On Wednesday, the city's community and public services committee agreed to those rules, which are similar to current tobacco bylaws.

People smoking cannabis outside would have to be 10 metres away from doors and open windows and 30 metres away from children's amenities, like playgrounds.

Smoking weed would also be banned on patios and at places like schools.

Similar to tobacco and electronic cigarettes, you won't be able to smoke legally in Churchill Square, Fort Edmonton Park or the zoo.

The Ontario election – what does it mean for cannabis?

With the Ontario general election just a day away, party leaders are making their final pitch to voters and political pundits are scratching their heads, trying to predict a winner.

The Progressive Conservative Party and the New Democratic Party are in a dead heat, with both expected to win 37% of the votes, according to an aggregation of polls. The Liberal Party, which has governed the province since 2003, is a distant third with 19%.

The legalization of recreational cannabis is just around the corner, and Ontario is a hub for the country’s cannabis industry, so stakeholders have been paying close attention to the election campaign. Here is what they have heard from the main parties:
