Canaccord Genuity sees major upside for Canadian cannabis as legalization of pot in Canada 'rounds 3rd base'

The analysts expect 'meaningful legal recreational sales' to roll-out on a national level by September/October.

Analysts at Canaccord Genuity hailed the Canadian Senate’s decision Thursday to legalize recreational marijuana as a “watershed moment” and they expect cannabis to go on sale by September or October.

However, the analysts pointed out that there were several logistical hurdles because new retail systems needed time to launch successfully.

Some Senate amendments to Bill C-45 could have a big impact on cannabis users

The long road to marijuana legalization faced another critical last step last week as the Senate voted on Bill C-45.

This bill will effectively alter the Criminal Code and some portions of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act to allow legal access to cannabis in this country.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau originally promised that Canadians would be able to light their first legal joint on July 1, 2018.

However, given the numerous political and administrative delays that Bill C-45 has faced so far, that deadline is looking more and more likely to go up in smoke.

At times, the Senate study of the bill felt never-ending.

Marijuana stock report: Oh, Canada

The North American Marijuana Index fell on Thursday, as pot stock investors celebrated the Canadian Senate’s passage of Bill C-45, which is set to legalize marijuana following 95 years of prohibition across the country. Following a vote of 56 to 30, with one abstention, in favor of the legislation, the bill heads back to to the House of Commons where MPs will have to vote on nearly four dozen amendments added by the Senate. Although mostly minor, some amendments do place considerable restrictions on Canadians, such as one allowing provinces to ban home cultivation of cannabis.

What experts are saying on cannabis supply shortages

As Canada gets closer to the legalization of recreational cannabis, many experts have debated the supply and demand relationship for the legal product the market will produce.

Observers of the industry have noted that licensed producers (LPs) have failed to disclose information on a material level as far as size of inventories in grams produced.

“Unfortunately, not all of the LPs are reporting the size of their inventories in grams, with the three largest LPs in terms of the dollar amount of inventory silent on the issue,” Alan Brochstein, cannabis analyst with 420 Investor, wrote in a column addressing the shortage.

3 things to love about Emerald Health Therapeutics' Q1 report, and 2 reasons to worry

Despite rapidly expanding its weed-growing capacity, this marijuana stock is at risk of being late to the party.

The legal marijuana industry is literally budding before our eyes. According to cannabis research firm ArcView, legal weed sales in North America surged higher by 33% in 2017 to $9.7 billion, and they're estimated to grow by an average of 28% through 2021 to nearly $25 billion. It's this rapid growth that's been pivotal in attracting investors to pot stocks, as well as driving up their valuations.

Legal cannabis won't cause major leap in usage, says P.E.I. senator

Senate passes marijuana bill with 46 amendments.

The legalization of cannabis will not result in a dramatic increase in usage, says P.E.I. Senator Diane Griffin.

Griffin made the comments after Bill C-45 passed the Senate on Thursday night with 46 amendments.

"Anyone who thinks all of a sudden the gates are going to be wide open to marijuana use is daydreaming," Griffin said on CBC's Island Morning.

"A lot of people have been using it for many years, especially young people, and they were being criminalized for it."

Griffin and fellow Island senator Percy Downe voted in favour of the cannabis bill, while Mike Duffy did not register a vote.

Toronto's first 'smokeless' condo starts sale ahead federal pot bill

The condo is slated to open for occupancy in 2021.

Canadians across the country are closely watching the countdown to the legalization of cannabis this summer, with many businesses clamouring to join the multi-billion dollar pot industry.

A Toronto housing developer, however, is bucking the trend by selling the GTA's first "smokeless" condominium.

"We know that smoke moves between units in buildings, it's impossible to prevent that," explained Heather Tremain, CEO of developer Options for Homes.

Tremain says the developer decided to go ahead with the idea after asking itself an important question.
