If you have a furry friend at home, you probably know that just about anything left on the floor, the coffee table, or in the garbage can pique your pet’s interest as a potential treat.

But what happens when they start wobbling around, showing clear signs of disorientation? Or, you look into Fido’s eyes and realize they look glassy, rather than playful? That’s what happened to Jen Gunter, a resident of Marin County, Calif. Her energetic three-year-old Labrador retriever, Hazel, wasn’t acting like herself.

For the first time all year, marijuana stocks didn't have investors seeing green -- or at least the right kind of green. Pot stocks took investors on a nauseating ride lower in May, with the Horizons Marijuana Life Sciences ETF, the first very first cannabis exchange-traded fund, shedding more than 13% of its value last month, which was almost double the decline of the broad-based S&P 500.

Out of the 56 marijuana stocks I regularly keep tabs on, a mere nine ended May higher, with five of those names advancing by roughly 5% or less. Meanwhile, of the 47 pot stocks that ended May lower, 35 of them ended down by at least 10%. Suffice it to say, the buzz surrounding the green rush came to a crashing halt, at least for one month.

The past few months in the marijuana stock market have shaped up to be quite influential on the future of the market. With so many changes occurring throughout the space, it can at times be difficult to keep up with where cannabis could be headed. While it may seem complicated at times, it appears as though there are several companies that continue to move to the forefront of the market. These companies may not be the largest growers of the substance, but they are able to offer an alternative investment in a market that can sometimes be viewed as limited.

Cannabis stocks dropped sharply on Monday, with shares broadly down across US and Canadian markets.

The North American Marijuana Index, which tracks the top cannabis stocks in the US and Canada, was down 3.6% to 241.6 points on Monday. The Horizons Marijuana Life Sciences Index ETF sank 2.8% to C$18.09.

Friday, May 31st, marked a huge day for the marijuana industry and for the near-term future of marijuana stocks. The US Food and Drug Administration held its first hearing on CBD. The hearing could lead to a decision that allows US companies to add CBD to food, drinks, and supplements under the oversight of the FDA.

Because it is only the first meeting regarding CBD, the most likely outcome is general guidelines for future hearings. But, even if a decision is not made, the slightest amount of good new that moves towards pro-CBD could push marijuana penny stocks.

One of the advantages of operating in Quebec or New Brunswick for a cannabis company is that it may be easier to obtain supply agreements with these provinces. This is because Quebec is primarily a French-speaking province, and New Brunswick is Canada’s only officially bilingual province.

French-Canadians tend to be accommodating towards one another, meaning supply agreements may be more prevalent from both Quebec and New Brunswick towards cannabis companies headquartered in these provinces. Today we have identified three cannabis stocks that are headquartered within these provinces and have secured agreements to supply the Société Québécoise du Cannabis (SQDC) with recreational cannabis.

Last month, Aurora Cannabis (TSX:ACB)(NYSE:ACB) management reiterated its guidance for a positive EBITDA beginning this current quarter ending June 30. Such an achievement could be a huge confidence booster to the marijuana investing public, which has placed astronomical valuation multiples on the growth stock. Could this noble target be achievable this quarter?

There are a lot of moving parts that require investor attention, as the company finally targets operating profitability, but a reduction in the company’s quarterly operating expense bill for a rapidly growing cannabis operation isn’t likely one of them.

Less than a year after cannabis became legal in Canada, Ontario has it’s first openly pot-friendly resort, which could have weed-lovers jumping for joy. Or kicking back in a Muskoka chair with a fattie in hand.

Adults-only Sir Sam’s Inn and Spa in the Haliburton Highlands, roughly a 2 1/2-hour drive north of Toronto, has been touted as the province’s first hotel/resort to welcome cannabis consumption by its guests, according to a press release from Cannabis Hotels, a website dedicated to the fledgling pot tourism industry.

When it comes to the fast-paced marijuana industry, Aurora Cannabis (NYSE:ACB) is arguably the most popular choice among investors. Following 15 acquisitions since August 2016, Aurora has built itself into a production and international powerhouse.

Cannabis stocks were mostly lower Monday, as investors digested the first reports from Friday’s regulatory hearing on cannabis and its ingredients and the news that Illinois is legalizing weed for adult recreational use.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration conducted its first-ever hearing on cannabis and its nonintoxicating ingredient CBD all day Friday with more than 100 speakers offering views, including researchers, health professionals, advocates, manufacturers and opponents.
