Beyond CBD: Martin Lee on the Importance of THC

A special hearing on cannabidiol (CBD) was held June 24 by the U.S. Senate Caucus on International Drug Control, and Martin Lee, director of Project CBD, contributed written testimony.

After briefly recounting the medical potential of CBD, Lee challenged the simplistic notion that it’s the “good” cannabinoid, as opposed to bad THC:

…But a CBD-rich remedy with little THC doesn’t work for everyone. Parents of epileptic children have found that adding some THC (or THCA, the raw unheated version of THC) to the CBD oil helps with seizure control in many instances. For some epileptics, THC-dominant strains are more effective than CBD-rich products.

U.S. Senators Press Feds To Remove Political Barriers To Medical Marijuana Research

At a hearing Wednesday, Sens. Cory Booker and Kirsten Gillibrand pressed federal officials to eliminate political barriers that are preventing research on the potential medical benefits of marijuana. The hearing, “Cannabidiol: Barriers to Research and Potential Medical Benefits,” was held by the Senate Caucus on International Narcotics Control.

Officials from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) echoed the senators’ concerns and expressed support for removing barriers to research that have been created by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

Legal marijuana sparks liability fears for Colorado employers

DENVER, Colorado - Marijuana legalization in Colorado put business owners like Dottie Peterson in a quandary.

Peterson doesn't want workers at the staffing service she operates to use marijuana on the job, though she doesn't mind if they do it in their free time. But she can't hire drug users because of her insurance. Many companies, including hers, get better worker's compensation insurance rates by being a drug-free workplace, so the new employees she hires must pass drug tests.

A Case Study in the Risks of Marijuana Biotech

Regular readers of MJINews hardly need to be persuaded that the growth of the legal marijuana market has made a number of entrepreneurs and their investors a lot of money. It will yet do more of the same. In another five years the industry could show total revenues of $35 billion, if all 50 states and Washington, D.C., legalize retail marijuana.

But … there is no profit without risk, and it is well for those who would invest in this field, either capital or entrepreneurial energy or both, that they recognize the risk.

Raid of the decade underway in America’s pot-growing epicenter

An estimated 100,000 marijuana plants are expected to be eradicated this week at an enormous, multi-farm bust in remote Northern California — the heart of the famed Emerald Triangle.

Humboldt, Trinity and Mendocino County Sheriff’s deputies — with no federal involvement — began serving search warrants Monday in a remote area at the intersection of the three counties.

Organic Industry Wants Biotechnology Regulated By Process, Not Product

About 40 activist organizations that usually can be counted upon to rally with the organic industry against genetically engineered (GE) plants and animals did just that on Monday. They weighed in with a letter to USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) for the federal regulation of biotechnology products.

APHIS has been inviting such comments, even holding web-based hearings, since last March as it withdrew work to update its 1990s rule for regulating GE organisms and decided to start over with a blank slate.

Watch: How the media used one tiny study to wildly exaggerate the threat of marijuana edibles

Since more states have legalized marijuana for medical and recreational purposes, more studies and news reports have sounded the alarm about children eating pot-infused edibles. But many of the concerns are greatly exaggerated, and are based on highly misleading statistics that make exposures to pot edibles seem much worse than they really are.
