In Weed We Trust

Denver is America's cannabis capital. Reefers, pipes, bongs — even candy — whichever way you roll, it's all legal

The mile-high city is what they call Denver on the tourist brochures and the posters — it sits in the lap of the Rocky Mountains. So it was with the serendipity of nominative determination that Colorado became the first state to legalise recreational use of marijuana in America — thus  transferring the slogan onto a million hilarious hippie T-shirts.

Why the Media Can't Get Its Story Straight About the Amazing Medical Potential of Cannabis

The press reports on the JAMA meta-analysis of cannabinoid research were all over the place. Most of them missed the story.

Judging from the disparate media headlines, last week’s meta-analysis of cannabinoid research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) contained something for everyone.

Here’s a sampling of the mainstream media’s seemingly schizophrenic coverage:

Medical Marijuana: Here's what I know now that I didn't know before

Deconstructing Medical Marijuana

I've been blogging about medical marijuana for about 6 weeks. Prior to that I really didn't know very much about the interesting and quite complicated world of medical marijuana. As a recreational user, you really don't think to ask the seller what strain of marijuana you are purchasing. As long as it gets you "where you want to go," you really don't care about anything else.

Now that same-sex marriage is legal nationwide, will marijuana follow suit?

The U.S. Supreme Court decision regarding same-sex marriage raises some interesting questions about another taboo that is losing its might almost as rapidly. Almost half the states have already enacted legislation making it legal to use marijuana either for medical or recreational purposes. That total is likely to rise next year when seven more states vote on initiatives that would make marijuana use legal. Is there a tipping point approaching where Congress will be forced to act?

Marijuana testing technology develops

YAKIMA, Wash. -- There are less than a dozen marijuana testing labs in the entire state. One lab opened in Yakima a year ago and today, they're still working on developing technology which could lead to some major scientific discoveries. Scientists are testing THC, the psychoactive chemical in marijuana, and other chemical compounds.

Research advancements have made it more profitable for growers and retailers. New this year, a process which determines the sex of marijuana plants, soon after seeds have sprouted.

"It frees up more space for more of the female plants, the desirable plants," said Analytical 360 Scientist, Max Rutter.

Cops warn of arrests at Church of Cannabis

Police, prosecutors will discuss enforcement plans for July 1 event

The city's top law enforcements officials put the new First Church of Cannabis on notice Friday: Anyone who smokes marijuana at the inaugural service next week will face criminal charges.

The warning from Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry and Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Chief Rick Hite "changes nothing," said Bill Levin, the church's founder, who pledged to move forward with plans for a service at noon Wednesday where marijuana will be smoked.

"They haven't raised the stakes," Levin said. "These have been the stakes the whole time."

How 420-friendly are Hillary and Jeb? Pot advocacy group offers report card

Among America’s biggest cannabis policy companies is grading governmental prospects on their individual reform policy– and the grades on the report card run the spectrum from A to F.

Unsurprisingly, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) got the best grade from the Cannabis Policy Job, which launched the report card at a press conference in Denver today. Paul has not only confessed to using cannabis as a boy and called out fellow Republican prospect Jeb Bush for his “hypocrisy” on the topic– he’s also joined with 2 Democratic senators to press an expense that would eliminate federal restrictions on medical marijuana in the 23 states that have actually currently legislated it.
