Drug interdictions result in a loss of about $8 billion in revenue for drug traffickers

On June 12, crew members of the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Vigilant offloaded 3,100 pounds of marijuana seized from a go-fast boat intercepted in the Caribbean Sea.

The story on how Coast Guard personnel seized the marijuana in late May in waters between Panama and the Colombian island of San Andrés emerged last week in Miami federal court records.

According to a criminal complaint filed by a special agent of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the action unfolded May 27 when a go-fast vessel was spotted traveling in international waters about 100 miles south of San Andrés Island, a Colombian possession east of Nicaragua and north of Panama.

Campaign underway in Denver to allow 'social marijuana consumption' in bars

DENVER –  Beer? Wine? Or weed?

A campaign is underway to ask Denver voters about allowing marijuana consumption in bars and other places that only allow people over 21.

Activists who campaigned for recreational pot legalization in Colorado have launched a petition drive to allow what they call "limited social marijuana consumption" at bars.

The activists need about 5,000 signatures to get the question on November ballots.

It would allow bars or clubs to allow marijuana use as long as patrons bring their own weed and comply with clean-air laws. That means the pot they consume would have to be edible, or if smoked, consumed on an outside patio the way cigarette smoking is regulated now. Outdoor smoking sites would have to be shielded from public view.

Improving Transparency and Ensuring Continued Safety in Biotechnology

In 1986, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) issued the Coordinated Framework for the Regulation of Biotechnology, which outlined a comprehensive Federal regulatory policy for ensuring the safety of biotechnology products. The Framework was updated in 1992.  While the current regulatory system for biotechnology products effectively protects health and the environment, advances in science and technology since 1992 have been altering the product landscape.

This Is a Big Win for Marijuana and Researchers

Over the past decade, the legal wins enjoyed by marijuana and its supporters have far outnumbered the losses.

Despite Florida failing to become the 24th state to legalize medical marijuana in last year's election (by a mere two percentage points), we've still seen a rapid rise in the number of new states willing to give medical marijuana a try in recent years, and four states (plus Washington D.C.) experimenting with the legalization of marijuana for recreational purposes.

California's 50,000 Pot Farms Are Sucking Rivers Dry

Each plant takes five gallons of water a day from legal and illegal water diversions

California lawmakers yesterday called for the regulation of marijuana farms to protect stream flows and help fish species like coho salmon and steelhead, which face possible extinction as the state's drought rages on.

In an informational hearing of the California State Senate Joint Committee of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Chairman Mike McGuire (D) of Healdsburg argued that a contingent of pot farmers in the state have disregarded the environment in favor of personal profit.

"Marijuana is literally sucking rivers dry," McGuire said.

Pot businesses continue operating despite cease and desist order

There’s been a lot of upset in Alaska’s new cannabis industry recently. Rule makers sent letters out to several marijuana businesses, advising them to close their doors.

“We’ve spent a lot of money trying to say that we are legitimate,” Discrete Deliveries owner Rocky Burns told the newly formed Marijuana Control Board (MCB).

His business is one of six recently sent a letter by Alcoholic Beverage Control Board (ABC) Director Cynthia Franklin, advising them to stop operating.

“There’s nothing specifically that is named in the letter that will happen if businesses don’t cease and desist,” Franklin explained.

Competition heats up for medical marijuana dispensaries

PORTLAND, Ore. -- The number of medical marijuana dispensaries has grown dramatically over the past few months. Licensed dispensaries outnumber liquor stores in Portland almost three-to-one.

Soon, those dispensaries may be able to sell to any adult.

An Oregon bill is now sitting on the governor's desk that would allow medical marijuana dispensaries to begin selling retail pot to the public on October 1.

Right now, those dispensaries can only sell to patients with a medical marijuana card.
