Rep. Dan Schoen, DFL-Cottage Grove, a co-sponsor of last year's medical marijuana bill, said Tuesday that he has accepted a consulting job with LeafLine Labs, one of two cannabis companies in the state. 

Schoen said he is taking an unpaid leave from his job as a Cottage Grove police officer through the end of the year. During that time, he said he will work as a security consultant on a contract basis with LeafLine Labs.

He declined to specify how much the job pays, but said "it's less than I made being a police officer."

Schoen said he worked with LeafLine Labs last year when they contacted him for help in scouting cities that would let them operate.

Pot use among teens has decreased since 2002, according to a new study published in The American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse. In addition, teens today disapprove of pot use more than teens a did a decade ago, the study reports.

Recent changes to marijuana laws in certain states have raised questions about how the use of pot could change, but lead researcher Christopher Salas-Wright believes the study proves that those who were concerned have nothing to worry about. Figures obtained by The Associated Press from the Oregon Public Health Division show that since Measure 91 passed last November, there have been 411 new applications to open medical marijuana dispensaries and 51 since the start of July, when the Legislature voted to allow medical marijuana dispensaries to start selling recreational pot on Oct. 1. There were 203 in the six months before the election.

A renewed effort to legalize medical marijuana in Florida received a major boost last month, as the People United for Medical Marijuana political committee raised close to $293,000 in June.

Of that, nearly $233,000 came from the Orlando law firm headed by attorney John Morgan, according to the state Division of Elections. Morgan has been the public image and foremost moneyman of the legal pot initiative.
