Rhode Island: Medical Marijuana Patients Doubled In 2 years

R.I. — The number of patients enrolled in the state's medical marijuana program has exploded in the past two and half years, more than doubling from 4,849 in 2013 to 11,620 today.

As of the beginning of this year, there were 684 physicians in the state providing certifications for medical marijuana patients, up from 512 in 2013, or a 33 percent increase over two years.

But while those numbers have skyrocketed, the number of people the state has devoted to the program's oversight — the licensing of patients and all those allowed to grow marijuana — has not changed.

Inhaled Cannabis Promising for Painful Diabetic Neuropathy

Inhaled cannabis can blunt the pain of diabetic neuropathy without seriously impairing cognitive function, a new study shows.

"The higher the dose, the more the pain relief," first author Mark Wallace, MD, told Medscape Medical News. "There was, however, a dose-dependent increase in euphoria."

The study is the first randomized controlled trial of inhaled cannabis for diabetic neuropathy pain, said Dr Wallace, chair of the Division of Pain Management at the University of California, San Diego. It was published in the July issue of the Journal of Pain.

Unfilled state regulatory jobs could delay medical marijuana openings in Las Vegas

Dozens of medical marijuana businesses in Las Vegas could face delays in their opening dates. The state isn’t rethinking the law that legalized the growth and sale of cannabis for patients’ use. Rather, it’s having trouble filling bureaucratic posts responsible for signing off on the dispensaries' compliance with that law.

After two recent employee departures, there are currently no inspectors based in Southern Nevada. In the meantime, one based in Northern Nevada has been traveling south when needed. The state is currently working to fill those vacancies.

Members of the medical marijuana industry are raising concerns about the turnover.

Medical marijuana cleared to treat PTSD in Washington

As a U.S. Army medic during the invasion of Iraq, Dante Cammarata was tasked with treating wounds, handing out pills and saving lives.

Back in the civilian world and grappling with his own less visible wounds, Cammarata, 34, says the cannabis plant probably saved his life.

Now the Olympia college student hopes to keep fellow veterans from taking their own lives by promoting marijuana as an alternative to prescription pills. By one estimate, post-traumatic stress disorder afflicts one in five Iraq and Afghanistan veterans.
