Chris Christie doubles down on marijuana comments

In a Chris Christie administration, there would be no such thing as legal marijuana use.

New DEA Leader: Pot Probably Not as Bad as Heroin

'I'm not an expert,' he adds.

The new leader of the Drug Enforcement Administration said Tuesday heroin probably is more dangerous than marijuana, diverging in tone from his embattled predecessor.

Acting Administrator Chuck Rosenberg, a former prosecutor whose stance on drug reform is somewhat of a mystery, also said his agents are not prioritizing marijuana enforcement -- though he's not ordered them off it.

Bipartisan Push Builds to Relax Sentencing Laws

WASHINGTON — For several years, a handful of lawmakers in Congress have tried to scale back tough sentencing laws that have bloated federal prisons and the cost of running them. But broad-based political will to change those laws remained elusive.

Now, with a push from President Obama and, perhaps even more significant, a nod from Speaker John A. Boehner, Congress seems poised to revise four decades of federal policy that greatly expanded the number of Americans who are incarcerated, to roughly 750 per 100,000, by far the highest rate of any Western nation.

Law Passes in Oregon to Begin Recreational Marijuana Sales Early

"If marijuana is legal to use, it shouldn’t be illegal to buy."

Oregon adults will be able to legally purchase recreational marijuana beginning Oct. 1, about a year earlier than had been expected.

Gov. Kate Brown (D) signed a law on Tuesday allowing the sale of recreational marijuana in existing medical marijuana dispensaries, starting just three months after Oregon's reformed marijuana law went into effect.

The measure "is a smart solution to a short-term logistical problem," Kristen Grainger, Brown's spokeswoman, told The Huffington Post. "Oregon’s new recreational marijuana law went into effect in July 2015, but Oregonians couldn’t lawfully buy it anywhere for another year or more. If marijuana is legal to use, it shouldn’t be illegal to buy."

Michigan Supreme Court: 'Inconsistencies' in medical marijuana law still causing 'confusion'

LANSING, MI — The state Supreme Court on Tuesday issued its ninth ruling on the Michigan Medical Marijuana Act in just under seven years, making special note of that frequency while expressing frustration with the ongoing legal debate over the voter-approved law.

"Unlike the procedures for the editing and drafting of bills proposed through the Legislature, the electorate — those who enacted this law at the ballot box — need not review the proposed law for content, meaning, readability, or consistency," Justice James Zahra wrote in the opening paragraph of the unanimous opinion.
