Rural Maryland sees jobs in medical marijuana

HAGERSTOWN — Washington County is a proudly conservative place. Voters haven't backed a Democrat for president since 1964, and same-sex marriage lost by a landslide in a referendum three years ago.

But when Chicago-based Green Thumb Industries pitched a proposal to put a medical marijuana production plant here, the county's five county commissioners — Republicans all — passed a resolution unanimously supporting the plan.

Residents in Hagerstown, the county seat, seem to be taking the news in stride. The consensus: yes to marijuana for relieving pain, no to recreational use.

Endocannabinoids Could Be Used To Erase Bad Memories

A brain circuit that helps create new memories to erase scary ones has been identified, at least in mice.

The circuit connects two brain regions associated with emotion and decision making, researchers said in a new study. Other studies have suggested that these brain circuits operate very similarly in both humans and rodents.

"It translates across species very effectively," said study co-author Andrew Holmes, a neuroscientist at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and the National Institutes of Health. "Immediately, we've got an idea of what may be going awry in the human brain in those folks who experience [post-traumatic stress disorder] and anxiety."

White House Gets Marijuana Science All Wrong

According to a press statement released by the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (1), popular culture continuously presents “confusing messages” about marijuana. Furthermore, the document states that political campaigns aimed at legalizing the drug “perpetuate the false notion that marijuana is harmless.”

The statement goes on to say that the Obama Administration persistently opposes legalizing marijuana. Why? Because it believes that making the drug legal would pose a significant health and safety risk to all Americans and would increase the availability and use of illegal drugs.

The White House’s view contrasts to the view of some in the scientific community that the drug actually has positive medical benefits.

CHICAGO — Medical and recreational marijuana might be on the brink of becoming big business for growers and dispensaries, but Rudy Medrano and his company, RM Global Security, see opportunity for the security and enforcement side of operations, too — so he's encouraging Chicago dispensers to shop local.

Marijuana in the 2016 U.S. Election

The news media will certainly focus a lot on marijuana in the 2016 election. Unless you have been living under a rock, you know that marijuana is covered a lot in the media these days. Many mainstream media outlets, once strong opponents of legalization, have now embraced marijuana with spin-off publications that focus solely on cannabis or they have reporters covering the marijuana beat.

Grow4Vets teams up to give free cannabis to veterans

DENVER, CO (KDVR/CNN) - Grow4Vets has been handing out cannabis to military veterans for a year in Colorado.

But the state's medical board has just ruled not to recognize marijuana as a treatment for PTSD.

High There! a cannabis-sharing social network teamed up with Grow4Vets to host an impromptu rally on their Save a Million Vets Tour.

“Now we've created a tour around the country called the Save a Million Vets Tour," Co-founder and CEO of High There! Todd Mitchem said.

Veterans lined up early in Rino's Taxi district, most wearing their colors, letting folks know where they served.

Mitchem came up with the first social sharing network for cannabis users. Now he is partnering with Grow4Vets, helping vets get medication.

Bud and Breakfasts and 420 Tours: Denver sees a cannabis 'gold rush'

It’s not unusual for 24-year-old Maggie Copeland to have a conversation with her coworkers about pot.

“It’s quite professional,” she said of her nonprofit office in Denver, Colorado. “Weed comes up a lot.

“After a tough day, it’s not uncommon that people at work will say ‘I’m gonna go smoke a bowl’ instead of ‘I’m gonna have a glass of wine’.”

Now that Minnesota's medical marijuana patients have gotten a taste of its fabulous product, MinnMed is raising prices across the board.

Survey: 79% Of U.S. Mayors Support Marijuana Decriminalization

Marijuana reform is a very popular political topic these days. I remember as recently as the beginning of this decade when supporting marijuana reform was considered to be political suicide. But more and more elected officials are getting on the right side of history every day it seems. Many local elected officials are particularly supportive of marijuana reform. A recent survey of mayors in the United States by Politico magazine found the following results;

First Maryland medical marijuana clinic open in Annapolis

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- The first specialty clinic for medical marijuana opened in Annapolis in June and has seen more than 100 prospective patients even though the Maryland Medical Cannabis Program isn't expected to be operational for another year.

Greenway Consultation, located in the Conte Lubrano Office Building, has three consultants and three physicians, who are not yet registered to recommend the drug through the Maryland Medical Cannibis Commission. The commission develops and oversees all licensing, registration, inspection and testing.

The clinic's spokesman Nick Petrucci said opening in advance of the program has advantages, such as beginning to build the patient-doctor relationship to expedite a recommendation for marijuana when the program begins.
