California Wildfires Burning Part of Medical Marijuana Industry

It’s a different kind of smoke than they’re used to. Several Bay Area medical marijuana dispensaries say wildfires around California are hurting their industry. They claim cannabis plants are growing around some of state’s fires, especially the Rocky Fire near Clear Lake.

By Wednesday night, the Rocky Fire burned 69,600 acres and destroyed 43 homes.

Timothy Anderson is the purchasing manager at Harborside Health Center, a medical marijuana dispensary in Oakland. He says one of the burned homes belonged to a cannabis grower who provided them with product.

US start-up plans to deliver marijuana to customers by drone

A US start-up is awaiting the regulatory green light to deliver marijuana direct to smokers doors via drones.

Trees Delivery, which hopes to get the go ahead to start its service in California, will allow its customers to place orders through their phone or computer, pay with virtual currency Bitcoin and receive their goods almost instantly.

San Francisco-based Trees offers three 'boxes': the bud box, which includes exotic and hard to find strains, the extract box, which contains hash, and a beginner box.

The boxes also contain accessories such as paper and filter tips, grinders, lighters and rolling papers.

The catch? Smokers must have a medical license to order marijuana under the law.

Surprising news about teens, marijuana, and health issues. It’s all good.

With the widespread availability of marijuana in recent years thanks to its legalization in a growing number of states, there has been increasing concern about the long-term health consequences on teens who might be able to get easier access to it illegally.

A study published by the American Psychological Association in the journalPsychology of Addictive Behaviors this week should alleviate some of the worst fears.

Hawaii medical marijuana dispensary licenses likely to be awarded on point scale

The process to determine Hawaii’s first medical marijuana dispensary license holders will likely be based on a point scale, state officials said Wednesday.

But just how transparent the application process will be has yet to be determined.

Medical marijuana has been legal in the Islands for 15 years, but this year’s Act 241 sets up guidelines for the first retail system of up to 16 dispensaries statewide.

Marijuana growers warned not to use illegal pesticides -- which is nearly all of them

The Oregon Department of Agriculture is warning marijuana growers to stop using illegal pesticides, while the state scrambles to put together a list of acceptable chemicals.

The federal government puts pesticides through tests that determine in what context a chemical may be used in agriculture and how much may be used. Those accepted uses are then listed on the label of the pesticide.

However, because cannabis is an illegal substance according to federal laws, there are no approved pesticides to use in marijuana cultivation. So, while many growers use pesticides, the application is technically against the law.

Regulations, few patients make New York medical marijuana a bad investment, Syracuse ...

Executives from those companies that won licenses and that will set up manufacturing and dispensary operations shared their strategies to succeed: starting small, diversifying into related products and leveraging experience in other states.

New York state will set the prices marijuana products can be sold at, register patients and train and authorize physicians who can recommend the treatment. Torrens said the small number of patients who are likely eligible, between 120,000 and 125,000 people, will make it difficult for the companies to succeed.

Two marijuana advocacy groups on Wednesday are set to submit proposed ballot initiatives that would allow Massachusetts voters to decide whether to legalize recreational pot smoking in the state.

The initiatives could become part of a wave of similar measures put before voters in a half-dozen U.S. states in 2016 as pro-marijuana groups follow a strategy that has already legalized the drug in four states plus the District of Columbia.

Banking the Unbanked: A Win-Win Proposition

By Fioana Ma, California State Board of Legalization Board Memeber

I was elected to the California State Board of Equalization (SBOE) in November 2014 to represent nearly ten million constituents in twenty-three counties. The SBOE was created in 1879 by a Constitutional Amendment to "equalize" the 58 independently elected county assessors who in those days were not all assessing, collecting and remitting equally to the state. Today, the SBOE oversees about 35 different tax and fee programs in California, collecting approximately 30% of the state's revenues each year, with the sales and use taxes representing the largest share.
