Marijuana advocates say D.C. needs dispensaries

D.C. is seen as a fairly progressive city because it allows recreational marijuana use. Advocates say the nation's capital now needs dispensaries.

WASHINGTON — A first-of-its-kind expo being held in D.C. is all about marijuana. The inaugural Cannabis Business Summit kicked off Sunday night with an awards ceremony at the Washington Hilton in Northwest.

Awards were given for innovation, activism and entrepreneurialism in this growing industry. The summit is like an industry trade show. With a list of speakers over two days, there’s an expo featuring the latest and greatest items in the pot business.

Oregon proposes higher medical marijuana fees

Medical marijuana growers would be subject to a $200 annual fee for every patient they grow for under a proposal being considered by the Oregon Health Authority.

Medical marijuana growers in Oregon can grow cannabis for up to four patients. Under current rules, the state charges $50 for every patient a grower takes on, but recent changes that expanded the health authority's oversight of production and processing prompted officials to propose the steeper fees to help cover the agency's expenses.

The fee increase is estimated to boost revenue from $1.3 million to $5.2 million in the 2015-17 budget cycle.

Palm Beach County Vote To Decriminalize Marijuana

Updated: In a 4-1 vote, the Palm Beach County Commissioners passed the ordinance that decriminalizes pot possession. The measure now gives police the option to issue a $100 citation to someone caught with 20 grams of pot or less, rather than arresting him.

Commissioner Hal Valeche had the lone dissenting vote.

The proposed ordinance would give the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office deputies the option of issuing a civil citation to violators or enforcing state law. The civil citation would make the possession of 20 grams or less of pot a civil offense rather than a criminal one. State law, however, states that pot possession is a crime.

Washington Pharmacists Vote to Recommend Descheduling Medical Marijuana

When I arrived at Highline College to sit in on a meeting of the Washington State Pharmacy Quality Assurance Commission (PQAC) last Friday, I was fairly certain the puke-yellow puffy Ed Hardy jacket I’d spotted on the bus on the way there would be the most interesting thing I’d see all day. Instead I was treated to a riveting theoretical discussion of the ramifications of changing the scheduling of marijuana in the Controlled Substances Act (CSA). This could be huge news.

Maine group recommends THC blood-level limit for marijuana-using drivers

A working group convened by the Legislature has recommended the state establish an official blood-level limit to determine when someone is driving under the influence of marijuana.

Group members were split, however, on what level of THC in the blood would show impairment, with some members saying the scientific community is divided on the issue and uncertainty could lead to false convictions.

The working group was convened by the Legislature’s Joint Standing Committee on Criminal Justice and Public Safety in response to a bill submitted by the secretary of state that proposed making the operating of a vehicle while having a THC level of 5 nanograms or more per milliliter of blood a criminal offense.

Is Our Stoner President Mentally Impaired?

Members of Congress concerned about America’s survival have shied away from impeaching President Obama on national security grounds. They either think impeachment would take too long or that the political process of impeaching the first black Democratic President would be too polarizing. There is an alternative: removing Obama from office because of cognitive impairment.
