Medical Marijuana Advocate Speaking to Seniors Curious About Cannabis

For years, Steven Stairs has advocated for medical marijuana users in Winnipeg – but recently, his audience has changed.

"It's definitely reaching a different demographic of seniors; that is much more unexpected than I ever thought it would be,” he said.

Recently, Stairs has started hosting information sessions at assisted living centres because residents are curious about cannabis.

"I tell seniors that doctors used to give me time frames for how long I would have vision,” said Stairs, who has glaucoma. “When I was 16, they said I’d be blind by 40. Then at 20, I'd be blind by 30 and since I started using medical marijuana they don't give me a time frame anymore."

So far, Stairs has spoken at three different facilities, including Riverwood Square.

Segregating Medical Marijuana Patients Isn't The Answer

In 1997 my father was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive cancer. He underwent treatments, both conventional and alternative, and despite a courageous fight, he passed away in the spring of 1998.

During his illness I visited with him and my mother quite often and remember how people looked at him while he had the stent that delivered chemotherapy drugs directly to a vein in his chest. There was a palpable sense of discomfort.

I have to admit, I had the same feeling of discomfort; the strong and vibrant man I remembered wasted away, as much from the treatments as from the cancer.

Poll: Majority Of Canadians Approve Of 'Grow Your Own' Ruling

Canada is home to some of the best cannabis growers on the planet. I have consumed my fair share of Canadian cannabis over the years, and I definitely have always been a fan. I have also always been a fan of medical marijuana programs that allow home cultivation. If a patient (or someone they know) has the resources, knowledge, and ability to grow their own medicine, they should be allowed to do so. Growing ones own cannabis not only helps a patient save money, but it gives the patient the ability to grow the exact kind of medicine that helps them the most.

New Study Suggests Marijuana's Impact On Crash Risk Has Been Greatly Exaggerated

Pot prohibitionists frequently warn that legalization will flood the roads with dangerously stoned drivers, leading to a surge in traffic fatalities. So far there is not much evidence of such a surge inColorado or Washington, where marijuana was legalized in 2012. A new study may help explain why: It looks like marijuana’s impact on traffic safety has been greatly exaggerated.

You Can Now Buy Marijuana-Infused Nutella (in Canada)

The growing popularity of marijuana-infused edibles has already led to a plethora of interesting new products. The latest one to join the ranks is Chrontella.

Chrontella fuses one of the most delicious hazelnut-chocolate sandwich spreads with everyone’s favorite recently legalized (in some states) “drug”: marijuana.

Unfortunately, Chrontella is not available in the United States, but can be bought from select cannabis retail outlets in Canada. Each Chrontella jar comes with 300mg of cannabis extract. It’s unclear, however, if the chocolate spread used here is the real deal.

Canada: Another cannabis vaping lounge to open in downtown Windsor

Downtown Windsor will have another place where people can vape or smoke medical marijuana — if Leo Lucier can pull off plans for his Vapelated Vapor Lounge.

“I want to set it up like a European cafe,” says Lucier, 46, proprietor of the new business at 26 Chatham St. E.

Lucier said he intended for the lounge to open on Thursday, but he admitted there’s a lot of work to be done. “We’re winging it,” he said.

Although mostly stripped of decor, the address still bears the bar, tables, and chairs of its former business, Fidel’s Havana Lounge. Instead of alcohol, the shelves now carry an assortment of  bongs and candy bars.

Canada: Petition calling for full marijuana legalization gains steam, especially in B.C.

British Columbians are taking a keen interest in a petition that asks for the Canadian government to fully repeal the prohibition of marijuana.

Of 12,549 signatures gathered so far, residents of B.C. account for 5,133 of them. That’s 41 percent, whereas B.C. accounts for roughly 13 percent of the country’s population.

The petition was launched on February 10 and is sponsored by Elizabeth May, leader of the federal Green Party and the B.C. MP for Saanich—Gulf Islands.
