Holland College prepares for legal marijuana

You'll be able to have your cannabis on P.E.I.'s Holland College campuses when it becomes legal next month, but you won't be able to smoke it.

"The introduction of legal cannabis causes us to rethink our view of substance use and abuse on campus," said college vice president Sandy MacDonald in an interview with CBC News: Island Morning Tuesday.

MacDonald said safety was the primary concern in the school's review, noting there are programs at the school — such as commercial diving and welding — where there are serious safety concerns should students come to class impaired.

Instructors have received training in how to detect impairment, he added.

Unresolved issues for cannabis excise duties

he federal Department of Finance issued its long-awaited legislative and regulatory proposals for the taxation of cannabis in November 2017, delivering on a Liberal Party election promise to regulate the distribution of cannabis “with appropriate federal and provincial excise taxes applied.” The resulting legislation was brought in by way of amendments to the Excise Act, 2001, which effectively place cannabis producers within the existing rules for excise duties that cover producers of tobacco, wine and alcoholic spirits, with modifications as applicable.

DIY cannabis: Alberta man offers tips for the budding home grower

If you've ever grown a tomato plant, you won't have a hard time growing cannabis.

A local private cannabis grower says the two plants aren't that different. With the proper soil, sunlight and nutrients, Tom Neumann says anyone can grow their own fresh supply of cannabis at a fraction of the price of products sold by licensed producers.

Albertans will be legally allowed to grow up to four cannabis plants per household starting Oct. 17, but Neumann has been legally growing medical cannabis for personal use at his home near Ardrossan for three years.

He wants to teach other Albertans how to grow their own weed through his new website, The Grow Show.

Universities putting finishing touches on campus cannabis policies

Universities are a place for higher learning, but officials are trying to avoid students getting high while trying to learn, once cannabis legalization comes into effect next month.

At Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Jane Fee, vice provost for students, says the rules still need to be finalized and put through a consultation process, but it's likely none of the four campuses will permit smoking or vaping.

"The idea will be that you shouldn't be in class or you shouldn't be at work if you are impaired in some way, either by alcohol or by cannabis or some other illegal drug," said Fee at the school's Surrey campus on Tuesday.

Leamington cannabis industry can't automatically rely on Mexican, Jamaican labour

Mexican and Jamaican workers who have come to Canada for decades to work in greenhouses may not be allowed to work in the cannabis industry.

The expanding cannabis industry in Leamington may require hundreds of workers but growing marijuana is illegal in Mexico.

Mexican consul Alberto Bernal Acero in Leamington said Tuesday it would be “awkward” for Mexican workers in a government program to be working in that industry.

The consulate needs to know the legal implications for the workers who are allowed to stay in Canada a maximum of eight months under the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program. Bernal Acero is now working with Canadian authorities and different parts of the Mexican government.

Where you can smoke cannabis in BC after legalization

While BC has a reputation for being laid-back, British Columbians can expect to be faced with some pretty strict regulations come October 17.

The penalties are no joke either. Violating provincial cannabis laws can result in “a fine ranging from $2,000 to $100,000, imprisonment of three to 12 months, or both.”

What consuming cannabis in BC will look like is primarily up to each municipality. Depending on your location, the rules vary widely between “public smoking OK, with some limitations” to near-prohibition.

Tougher impaired driving laws come into effect in Sask. this weekend

As of Saturday, anyone caught driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs can have their licence suspended indefinitely and their vehicle seized for up to 60 days.

The harsher penalties for impaired drivers were passed by the Saskatchewan government this spring and come into effect Sept. 1.

The federal government recently passed legislation creating Criminal Code charges for driving while under the influence of marijuana. The new provincial legislation outlines the consequences drivers will face under the provincial Traffic Safety Act for committing those offences.
