Expecting a dip in sales, some Alberta liquor merchants are shifting to cannabis

But the line between the two sectors is set to become increasingly blurred as some of those booze merchants make peace with pot by either switching over to the cannabis side or expanding into it.

Even before the advent of legit marijuana, many liquor retailers, particularly in Calgary, have seen the economic downturn take a five- to 10-per-cent bite out of their sales volume over the past three years, said Ivonne Martinez, spokeswoman for the Alberta Liquor Store Association (ALSA).

“Cannabis is an opportunity to make up that loss,” said Martinez.

“It’s very similar to alcohol — we know how to do this properly and would be well-prepared to do so.”

Calgary police officers banned from consuming legal marijuana even on days off

Calgary police officers will not be allowed to consume marijuana once it's legalized even on their days off — and the union representing members is unhappy, saying the service "took the easy way out."

The abstinence directive was issued to CPS staff on Friday less than four weeks before recreational marijuana is legalized across the country.

"Sworn members who are qualified to use firearms and are able to be operationally deployed are prohibited from using recreational cannabis while on or off duty," reads the policy, a copy of which was obtained by CBC News.

'Path of least resistance'

The policy "pretty much covers everybody in the service," said union president Les Kaminski, adding CPS has taken the "path of least resistance."

Cova Software announces plan to retain retail cannabis data in Canada

Retail cannabis point of sale software company and part of the iQmetrix group, Cova Software today announced plans to help retailers in Canada improve protection of retail data and Canadian consumer information by migrating all Canadian cannabis retail data to Azure Canada-Central located in Toronto. The move is set to begin on Sept. 27.

Edible cannabis: What you need to know

With the Cannabis Act set to legalize most forms of recreational cannabis in just a few short weeks, many consumers and businesses alike may require further clarity on the limited scope of legalization.

Unlike the fresh, dried and oil options, edible cannabis will not be available for purchase and sale on October 17, 2018.

The sale and purchase of 'edibles', or cannabis-containing food products, will not become legal in Canada until 2019, due to the added complexity of dosing, packaging and regulating these products. This article provides an overview of the current status of edibles in North America, including a review of the regulatory schemes in certain U.S. states, including Colorado, California, and Massachusetts.

This cannabis giant just became profitable

While pot stocks are living the high life, soaring as major beverage companies look to get into the game as Canada prepares to officially legalize recreational marijuana, pot poster boy Aurora Cannabis just released its quarterly earnings—and investors are impressed.

In the fiscal fourth quarter which ended on June 30th, Aurora posted a 223-percent increase in earnings, hitting $14.7 million (C$19.1 million). It also said net income moved into profit —exactly what investors were looking for.

Net income for the quarter was around $61.6 million (C$79.9 million). That’s highly significant because losses in the same quarter last year were (C$19.2 million).

Why companies are eyeing the cannabis compound that doesn't get you high

It's being touted as the next new miracle ingredient for everything from pet treats to anti-aging face creams and elixirs that can help an athlete's aching body recover faster.

But that's not the only reason that cannabidiol or CBD, a compound derived from cannabis that doesn't get people stoned, is being eyed by companies of all stripes including beverage giant Coca-Cola.

Regulations and attitudes are warming up to it and the potential for CBD-infused products to be available on grocery or pharmacy shelves -- instead of in tightly-regulated pot shops -- in the not-so-distant future.

Including in Canada down the road, says Trina Fraser, an Ottawa-based lawyer who advises the cannabis industry.

Globally, the market for CBD could be "massive," she said.
