20 women set to dominate the international cannabis space in 2019

Not long ago, the cannabis industry could take pride in the higher-than-usual percentage of C-suite positions occupied by women, with roughly 1-in-3 of these posts held by a woman. This number plummeted in just a couple of years, however, dropping from 36 percent in 2015 to 27 percent in 2017, according to a Marijuana Business Daily survey.

A recent Dope Magazine article looked into the causes of this and identified three main drivers behind the trend:

Canada's Canopy aims to bring pot products to U.K. this year

Canopy Growth Corp. (WEED.TO 0.61%) has joined forces with a U.K. researcher of cannabis-based therapies after the British government moved to liberalize the use of medical marijuana.

The new company, formed with Beckley Canopy Therapeutics Ltd., aims to make products available in Britain from early this year. The government made it legal for specialist doctors to prescribe medical marijuana for patients with severe clinical need in November.

The decision came after studies showed that it could benefit children with conditions such as severe epilepsy, although the government said it was not a step toward legalizing cannabis for recreational use.

Cannabis stocks break their three-week winning streak, despite positive pot news in U.S.

Pot stocks have broken their three-week winning streak, a somewhat ironic shift in sentiment given that last week was full of positives on the U.S. cannabis policy front.

In separate addresses, the governors of New York and New Jersey each said they’ll make legalization of recreational cannabis a priority for 2019, potentially opening up a new market with a combined population of close to 30 million. Perhaps more importantly for the future of the industry, U.S. Attorney General nominee William Barr said he’ll respect state marijuana laws even though he personally disapproves of legalization. He also urged Congress to make a country-wide decision on the drug’s legality.

Class action against pot producer Organigram gets green light for trial

A class action lawsuit against licensed cannabis producer Organigram Inc. has been given the green light to proceed to trial.

The Supreme Court of Nova Scotia last Friday certified the proposed class action, filed in 2017 after the Moncton-based organic pot grower recalled a number of its products due to the detection of certain pesticides.

Organigram in December 2016 announced a voluntary recall of certain lots of medical marijuana supplied between August and December that year after a certain pesticide not registered for use on marijuana under the Pest Control Products Act was detected.

Marijuana stocks have investors cold in the new year

Horizons ETFs Management, the company behind one of the most popular cannabis ETFs in Canada, published its quarterly survey results of advisors and investors on Monday (January 21).

The survey shows the decline of cannabis stocks has caused losses taking an impact on the bullish sentiment for these securities.

On the overall Canadian markets, the report indicates “advisor and investor bullishness has declined on nearly all asset classes heading into the new year.”

'It's not working': Why some weed dispensaries are staying open

The provincial government is pretty clear on its website: Cannabis NB is "the only legal retailer of cannabis."

But you wouldn't know that from the steady stream of consumers filtering in and out of King Canna, a Saint John medical dispensary on a lunch hour in January — three months after New Brunswick launched its government monopoly on cannabis sales.

Raided by police twice in 2017 — and quickly reopened — in 2019, it's busier on a weekday afternoon than some Cannabis NB locations.

Squeezing out the black market is the "main goal" of the provincial cannabis authority, then-premier Brian Gallant said in  October, a sentiment echoed by Cannabis NB president Brian Harriman.

Better marijuana stock: Origin House vs. Organigram Holdings

Sometimes the best investing strategy is to start out by thinking small. Small-cap stocks often outperform the stocks of bigger companies in part because they can have more room to run.

Two of the most appealing small-cap marijuana stocks on the market right now are Origin House (NASDAQOTH:ORHOF)and OrganiGram Holdings (NASDAQOTH:OGRMF). Origin House is the smaller of the two, with a market cap of around $375 million compared to OrganiGram's market cap of more than $600 million.

Origin House stock has also outperformed OrganiGram over the last year. But which of these two small marijuana stocks is the better pick now?

Better marijuana stock: Cronos Group vs. MariMed

Cronos Group (NASDAQ:CRON) and MariMed(NASDAQOTH:MRMD) accomplished something in 2018 that most marijuana stocks didn't: They delivered positive returns. Both stocks crushed the performances of the top marijuana exchange-traded funds (ETFs).

MariMed was, by far, the bigger winner, with its stock skyrocketing 371% compared to Cronos Group's 34% gain. But which of these two high-flying marijuana stocks is the better pick for investors now?

Tilray dodges a bullet -- Is the hot marijuana stock now a buy?

This could easily have been a dismal week for Tilray's (NASDAQ:TLRY) share price. It could have easily been the worst week ever for the stock. But it wasn't.

Jan. 15, 2019 -- last Tuesday -- was a pivotal day for Tilray. That's when the company's initial public offering (IPO) lockup period expired.
