Ontario’s first marijuana dispensary expected to open this week

Ontario marijuana dispensary Weedology passed its state inspection and received its license last Friday.

Store Manager Eric Lantz said they began placing orders for products Friday in hopes of getting the shop open this week. They’re not sure what day, but they’d become the first pot shop to open right across the state line from the Treasure Valley, Ontario Community Development Director Dan Cummings told the Statesman on Monday.

“We’re hopefully going to be open by Wednesday ... but Friday is our anticipated opening,” Lantz said.

4 Canadian cannabis stocks that could acquire CannTrust

On July 15, we examined the CannTrust Holdings regulatory scandal and whether or not we believed investor trust could be restored. Today, we’ve analyzed an article written by BNN Bloomberg, which discusses two undisclosed white knights that might be interested in purchasing CannTrust. The article talks about how various inside sources have told BNN Bloomberg that at least two Canadian LPs have been approached by investment bankers to gauge interest in acquiring CannTrust.

Today we have identified four Canadian cannabis stocks that we believe have the potential to acquire CannTrust Holdings.

Recreational weed sales in Canada enjoyed a significant boost in May — up 14 per cent — according to data from Statistics Canada.

“Sales improved to $85 million in May, up from $74 million in April and $60 million in March,” Marijuana Business Daily reports. British Columbia recorded the biggest sales growth in May with a 37 per cent increase thanks to improved access via the opening of a number of new dispensaries.

New medical cannabis facility taking root in Espanola

A medical cannabis company is building a 32,000 square foot cultivation facility in Espanola, Ont.

Jeff Scharf, President and CEO of GaiaCann Inc., began building a greenhouse to grow lettuce, but pivoted to cannabis after being approached by individuals in the sector.

"Our goal is to create pharmaceutical grade cannabis products," he said.

The facility is at the south end of Espanola, next to a small solar panel farm which Scharf also owns.

He expects the facility will be ready for operation in January 2020 and will cost upward of $20 million to complete. Work crews have just finished the walls, roof and upper level flooring. He says the electric and ventilation systems are next.

The building's large, white roof slants southward.

1 incredibly cheap pot stock worth buying now

Pot stocks have been outstanding growth vehicles for the better part of the past two years. The legalization of adult-use marijuana in Canada, the slow but steady march toward widespread legalization in the United States, and the 2018 Farm Bill -- that essentially legalized hemp -- all helped to drive valuations higher across the industry during this period.

Pot policy review in U.S. isn’t helping stocks: Cannabis weekly

Suddenly, the U.S. Senate is willing to talk about pot.

Rather unexpectedly, the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs will hold a hearing on cannabis banking Tuesday. This marks the first time the Republican-controlled Senate has agreed to examine the so-called SAFE Act, which would allow banks to offer services to pot companies in compliance with state law.

Growing marijuana could create whole new crop of gardeners

Could cannabis be good for gardening? We have all heard about the benefits of the Canadian cannabis industry for Bay Street, the agricultural sector and even the Canadian economy, but I think cannabis could create a whole new crop of future gardeners.

Cannabis makes being a gardener or grower cool: well, at least in the eyes of those who desire growing their own. Never in modern history has there been a time you could legally grow cannabis at home. In the past, you had to resort to growing it secretly in a remote forested area or indoors in a tented basement.

The most important thing to know about investing in marijuana stocks

Few industries are expected to generate the green over the long run quite like the cannabis industry. With Canada legalizing recreational marijuana in October, and two-thirds of the U.S. allowing physicians to prescribe medical cannabis (11 states have also legalized adult-use weed), it's easy to see how North America has become the breeding ground for growth in the legal pot industry.

Pot offers new hope for rural towns hurt by decline of the fishery

With legal cannabis a growing industry in the country, and edibles about to become available in the fall, lots of prospective businesspeople are trying to get a piece of the action.

In rural Newfoundland, there's a trend happening in the industry.

Former fish plants that have been shuttered for lack of product turn out to be perfect for growing pot.

There aren't that many large buildings available for food production in rural Newfoundland, and cannabis counts as food under federal regulations because it's consumed. Many of them have three-phase power, which is needed in industrial buildings, a reliable source of water and lots of growing space.
