U.S. border protection has barred a young Canadian woman from crossing the border after cannabidiol (CBD) oil was found in her backpack — a non-psychoactive product of the cannabis plant she uses to treat the painful side effects of scoliosis.

The woman, who has asked not to be identified by CBC News pending the outcome of an application for reentry, is the latest Canadian to face border troubles after Canada legalized cannabis last year.

Thousands of Canadians have been denied entry to the U.S. simply for admitting they've smoked a joint once in their lives. Others have been banned from entering the country for life for carrying cannabis products to the border — a punishment that this unsuspecting CBD oil user could now face as well, according to immigration experts.

Cannabis investors have had a rough ride in the last 12 months. Several stocks lost significant value due to regulatory issues and missing analyst target estimates. Cannabis stocks were overvalued and expensive.

Ontario has released results of its second lottery selecting 42 operators hoping to run cannabis shops in the province.

The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) said it received 4,684 applicants in the draw.

Unlike the first lottery held earlier this year, which faced criticism for not including a merit component, applications for the second draw were required to show evidence that they have secured retail space that could be used as a store if they are selected, and that they have enough capital to open it.

Those selected will have until Aug. 28 to pay licensing fees, and provide a letter of credit for $50,000 to the regulator.

Few news items this summer jolted the legalized cannabis industry quite like the termination of former co-CEO Bruce Linton from Canopy Growth Corp.

Tilray (TLRY) stock got a boost after the firm announced it has signed its first deal to supply marijuana from its EU campus. It is the first move in the Canadian firm's planned invasion of Europe.

The firm inked a $3.3 million initial supply agreement to deliver medical cannabis to German distributor Cannamedical Pharma from its new growth facility in Portugal. The delivery is expected to be completed in the fall.

"This is a significant milestone for Tilray as we ramp up our capacity to serve international markets and generate revenue from our EU campus through the end of 2019," Tilray CEO Brendan Kennedy said in a news release.

A numbered company with the same Toronto address as the illegal cannabis dispensary CAFE, which has repeatedly been shut down by city officials and police, was a winner in Ontario's latest cannabis store lottery. 

The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) announced 42 lottery winners — 4,800 people or companies had expressed interest in opening a legal pot shop — that will now have the chance to open a legal store on Wednesday. The full list is at the bottom of this story.

Among the winners was 11180673 Canada Inc., based at 104 Harbord St., where one of CAFE's location is based. 

Cannabis stocks were broadly flat on Wednesday, after a drop on Tuesday and a rocky few months for the industry. 

The North American Marijuana Index, which tracks the top cannabis stocks in the US and Canada, was up 0.1% at 192.7 points. Elsewhere, the Horizons Marijuana Life Sciences Index ETF was up 0.2% to C$15.22, while the OTCQX Cannabis Index slipped 0.2% at 663.7 points.

FSD Pharma Inc (CSE:HUGE) (OTCQB:FSDDF) shares were soaring Wednesday after the firm announced the launch of its online ordering system to fill medicinal cannabis prescriptions. 

While cannabis stocks have not performed well since early April, the month of July was especially brutal for the sector. There is no doubt that the drama surrounding CannTrust Holdings (TSX:TRST)(NYSE:CRST) had a lot to do with this catastrophic performance. However, there may be a silver lining — or at least an important lesson to glean — from this scandal, one of the many that have rocked the marijuana sector in the past few months.
