Legalized marijuana would be eliminated under a Christie presidency

TRENTON — Gov. Chris Christie vowed Sunday to eliminate legalized marijuana in states like Colorado and Washington if he's elected president.

The governor, speaking on CBS' "Face the Nation," said his administration would use federal rules that outlaw marijuana to clamp down on states that legalized recreational pot use.

"Yes sir," Christie told host John Dickerson when asked whether he'd go after Colorado and Washington.

"If you were president would you return the federal prosecutions in the states of Colorado, Washington states?" Dickerson asked.

"Yes," Christie said.

"So, if somebody's enjoying that now in their state, if you're president, that's getting turned off?" Dickerson continued.

Louisiana may become the first state in the South to legalize medical marijuana

Late Thursday, the Louisiana House of Representatives passed a bill that would allow for the legalization of medical marijuana in that state, and the signs are that Republican Governor Bobby Jindal will sign it.

“Our view on medical marijuana was it had to be supervised and had to be a legitimate medical purpose and this bill meets that criteria,” the governor said while the bill and its amendments were being debated in late May.

Ohio Legislators working to prevent rise of marijuana monopolies from pro-pot plans

COLUMBUS -- Ohio lawmakers are beginning to hear some of the objections raised against plans to legalize marijuana, and it might not be for the reason you think.

According to a report by the Columbus Dispatch, bipartisan support is building to suppress any legislation that could use constitutional amendments to create monopolies.

As currently written, the leading pro-pot proposal -- submitted by ResponsibleOhio -- would change the Ohio Constitution to allow 10 investment groups the exclusive right to grow and sell marijuana wholesale.

Ed Gogek: Medical marijuana laws facilitate abuse

Minnesota and other state’s legislatures across the country are legalizing medical marijuana, but the nation’s physicians aren’t requesting these laws. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Society of Addiction Medicine both are against medical marijuana laws. The American Medical Association doesn’t support them either.

Groups representing patients aren’t behind these laws. The American Cancer Society hasn’t demanded them, and the Glaucoma Foundation even warns patients against using the drug.

Concealed carry, marijuana laws raise questions for employers

Two relatively new Illinois laws may cause unexpected headaches for businesses, but The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce has scheduled a seminar intended to help ease the pain.

The state's concealed carry gun law is already more than a year old, but its medical marijuana pilot program is just getting started.

Attorneys with the statewide law firm Heyl Royster last year started presenting seminars on concealed carry and how it could affect both employers and employees.

Chrissie Peterson of Heyl Royster's Peoria office said businesses have reacted responsibly to the concealed carry law and have placed the appropriate signs on their doors if they don't want to allow guns.

Medical marijuana could ease Lehigh Valley children's suffering

Christopher Kenney attended his prom last month in Wind Gap.

That's a big deal for most teens, but even more so for Christopher. The 18-year-old has tuberous sclerosis, a genetic disorder that causes benign tumors to grow in any organ of the body. He has one small one in his kidney and 14 hardened areas in his brain's frontal lobe, part of which has been removed as a result. His condition has resulted in uncontrolled seizures and horrible behavioral problems that have been made worse by his anti-seizure drugs.

His mother, Deena, told me he was tremendously excited when his parents drove him to the prom at Colonial Academy, part of Colonial Intermediate Unit 20 for students with various special needs. Unfortunately, the dream quickly turned into a nightmare.

Mayo Clinic, OMC let docs decide about medical marijuana

Mayo Clinic and Olmsted Medical Center will let their physicians decide whether they want to certify their Minnesota patients so they can receive medical marijuana.

Beginning July 1, non-smokable medical marijuana becomes legal in the state. In order to access it, patients must have one of nine qualifying conditions, which include cancer, multiple sclerosis and terminal illness. But before patients are eligible to receive medical marijuana in pill, liquid or oil form, they must first be certified as having one of the qualified conditions by a physician, physician assistant or advanced practice registered nurse.

Mayo Clinic spokesman Karl Oestreich said in a statement the clinic has developed a policy for its health-care providers.
