American Medical Association Votes to Support Legal Protections for Physicians who Recommend Cannabis

Delegates to the American Medical Association (AMA), the largest association of physicians and medical students in the United States, have passed a resolution in support of protecting physicians who recommend cannabis from legal prosecution. The vote came during an annual meet in Chicago.

Specifically, the AMA agreed that in states where the therapeutic or recreational use of cannabis is legal, physicians who give it to patients for “an approved medical condition” should be guaranteed they will not face federal prosecution for doing so.

Up in smoke? California lawmaker wants to defund DEA's pot eradication program

WASHINGTON –  A California lawmaker is pushing to get rid of the Drug Enforcement Administration's pot eradication program, arguing it's fiscally irresponsible to spend millions burning up marijuana plants at a time when several states are legalizing the drug.

Rep. Ted Lieu, a Democrat, proposed an amendment to a fiscal 2016 spending bill that would cut the DEA's $18 million budget for the program in half. It would redirect $9 million to fund programs that help children who are victims of domestic and sexual abuse.

“Next year, I will bring another amendment to eliminate the program completely,” Lieu said in a written statement.

South Dakota: Possible medical marijuana measure advances

South Dakotans might get a chance to decide whether medical marijuana should be allowed.

The Attorney General's Office said Tuesday that an explanation for an initiated measure to legalize marijuana has been filed with the Secretary of State's Office.

Melissa Mentele, the founder of an advocacy organization that has helped two families relocate to Colorado, authored the measure. Despite past failure to legalize medical marijuana use in the state, she feels confident this latest measure will garner strong support.

"Personally I think it's a slam dunk," she said. "I think there is so much science out there that people can't dispute it."

Nutritional High Building a Multi-State Edibles Manufacturing Platform

WHITEFISH, MT / ACCESSWIRE / June 10, 2015 / Consistency is key. This is the philosophy under which Nutritional High is building its business from day 1. Headlines abound about marijuana edibles containing anywhere from 0 to 200% of the dosage stated on the package. Some purveyors of edibles, be it homemade brownies or products purchased at dispensaries, find dosing an issue. Testing in Colorado confirms that dosing is a significant challenge for marijuana edible companies as they try to ramp up production, and this is a challenge Nutritional High is taking up.

Marijuana legalization divides Christie, Fiorina

As 2016 GOP hopefuls Chris Christie and Carly Fiorina came out this week with opposing views on legalization of marijuana in the U.S., a new Dutch study shows college students who smoke weed performed worse in school than those who stopped smoking.

Researchers were able to conduct a unique study in the Netherlands, where pot has been legal for many years, when authorities in the city of Maastricht placed temporary restrictions banning foreigners from buying weed in “coffee shops.”

The Johnson City Press reports that 46 farmers are receiving the seeds this year through a pilot program offered by the Tennessee Department of Agriculture. Officials hope to learn what varieties of hemp will grow best in which areas of the state.

Washington County farmer Wayne Smith says he expects to harvest the crop in four months and sell hemp oil at a local farmers market.

Carly Fiorina Cries Federalism on Marijuana

Without a clear, crowd-pleasing conservative position on issues like marijuana and same-sex marriage, the safe spot for GOP politicians is in invoking federalism.

Republican presidential candidate Carly Fiorina has been spouting off this week about marijuana. While she doesn't personally endorse legalizing the "complex chemical substance," Fiorina told Fox & Friends Tuesday that she supports the right of states such as Colorado to "make that choice."

Medical marijuana program still facing delays

By Kathleen Ronayne, Associated Press | Associated Press –

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) -- For 20 years, Frank Paine has suffered from chronic back pain that caused him to retire early in 2009 and now makes it hard for him to walk long distances.

He's tried numerous medications, physical therapy and acupuncture. None of it has worked, but he and his doctor see another possible source of relief: Medical marijuana.

The state legalized medical marijuana in 2013, but Paine still has no idea whether it's a treatment that will work. He won't use it until he can access it legally and that's still not possible, a lag that has frustrated potential patients.
