DPTV: Activists share plan for Denver pot consumption and more

The same activists who in 2012 successfully legalized the cultivation, sale and use of recreational marijuana in Colorado have started their next big initiative: The push to allow pot consumption in places now off limits.

Activists want a measure on the November 2015 Denver ballot that asks voters to OK allowing marijuana consumption in commercial establishments, including bars and clubs, that meet certain guidelines.

They hope to get the question approved by the clerk and recorder’s office and gather more than 4,700 signatures before summer’s end.

BREWER, Maine — An organizer for a community education series intended to raise alarm over the pitfalls of marijuana legalization in Maine said turnout was low during their first public session because most people aren’t that concerned about marijuana.

In all, five people who were not affiliated with the Bangor Area Recovery Network attended the meeting Wednesday that featured a slideshow entitled “Marijuana in the New Millennium.”

Medical marijuana manufacturers hope to erase stigma of drug

When Cottage Grove Mayor Myron Bailey announced several months ago on Facebook that his suburb would be soon home to a new pharmaceutical business, residents were ecstatic over the new jobs it would bring.

But a day later, when he clarified that it was for a facility producing medical marijuana, people in the community were stumped.

The reaction on social media, Bailey recalled, was "Wait. What?"

City officials then had to educate themselves about medical marijuana so they could placate residents over concerns ranging from public safety to odor.

INDUSTRIAL HEMP PLANTED IN CHRISTIAN COUNTY

More than 100 acres of industrial hemp will emerge during the next week after being planted Friday and Tuesday near Pembroke and Crofton. Kendall Clark and farm employee Landon Hopper used a Kubota tractor and a modified Kinze planter Tuesday to plant 95 acres of industrial hemp at Clark's Oak Lane farm. Clark says he decided to start out a little bigger than some farmers.

Clark says planting went well, but there were a few challenges he had to overcome to use a traditional planter.

Industrial hemp advocate Katie Moyer says it is exciting to see more than 100 acres of industrial planted in Christian County.

Hemp Historian Arinon Compass of Florida says Kentucky is at a critical stage in the reintroduction of industrial hemp in the United States.

Medical marijuana now legal for those with certain diseases in Georgia

Medical marijuana cards will now be available to those suffering from debilitating diseases in Georgia.

Georgia mother Corey Lowe has been waiting for the day medical marijuana would be legal.

Her 13-year-old daughter, Victoria Lowe, suffers from epileptic seizures and the family learned the seizures would stop when she tried cannabis oil in Colorado.

“It worked remarkably,” Corey Lowe said.

The new medical marijuana law allows families like the Lowes to possess up to 20 liquid ounces of low grade THC cannabis oil.

But first you have to qualify. The Georgia Department of Public Health said in order to get the oil people have to live in Georgia for at least a year and an application would have to be submitted by a doctor.

How the Colorado Supreme Court just confused every employer in America about marijuana

Earlier this week, the Colorado Supreme Court unanimously confirmed that although medical marijuana is legal, employers have the power to fire workers if they fail company-sponsored drug tests. Monday’s ruling is the latest in a series of decisions around the country denying job protection to state-sanctioned medical marijuana users who medicate off-duty. More than that, the decision is significant in that it sends a message to employers across other states wrangling with adopting laws to a nascent industry that is illegal under federal law.
