National Cancer Institute Updates Their FAQ: Cannabis Shrinks Tumors

The institute recently updated its ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ page about marijuana to include various studies revealing how cannabis “may inhibit tumor growth by causing cell death, blocking cell growth, and blocking the development of blood vessels needed by tumors to grow” while also protecting normal, healthy cells.

“A laboratory study of cannabidiol (CBD) in estrogen receptor positive and estrogen receptor negative breast cancer cells showed that it caused cancer cell death while having little effect on normal breast cells,” the NCI stated. “Studies in mouse models of metastatic breast cancer showed that cannabinoids may lessen the growth, number, and spread of tumors.”

Here’s the NCI’s full list:

Can Marijuana Treat Alzheimer’s? THC Reduces Brain Plaque Buildup

Though it may seem counter intuitive to use weed as a treatment for memory loss, Alzheimer’s researchers believe that marijuana may outshine drugs currently on the market for this devastating disease.

How? It just so happens that the active ingredient in cannabis, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), can inhibit the buildup of debilitating plaques that eventually cause brain cells and neural pathways to die.

Even as laws change, the 'M' word is banned in head shops

PHILADELPHIA You still can't say "marijuana" in the head shop.

For years, the stores that sell marijuana pipes and bongs have insisted that the products they sell are for tobacco use, choosing their words carefully to avoid being ensnared in laws against marijuana paraphernalia.

As states and cities across the country have lowered the penalties for possession, a patchwork of federal, state and local laws means little has changed at the head shops.

“The map of the United States is colorful as to where you can lawfully buy paraphernalia and not use magic code words,” said Allen St. Pierre, executive director of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws.

Medical pot conference brings hard-hitting speakers to Portland

It exists, says company chairman Frank Fabrozzi, to support medical marijuana users whose cannabis medicines are not covered by conventional health insurance programs.

McDonald has had cancer as well as complications from a 2008 bite of a brown recluse spider that included a staph infection and heart failure. Throughout the day, he will inhale the Cannabis Sativa strain vapors in order to elevate his mood.

However, marijuana has various medicinal benefits.

“The absorption is that much greater when you vaporize rather than burn with a match, with the puff of a joint or smoking a pipe”, D’Amico said.

Proposal for Fairbanks borough-wide marijuana tax fails

FAIRBANKS — An effort failed on Thursday to bring a marijuana tax to the voters in the Fairbanks North Star Borough.

The assembly called a special meeting to vote on a tax measure, which would have gone on the October ballot, but two assembly members were absent and none of the various tax rates suggested could gain the five votes necessary for approval.

“This is a giant guessing game because we don’t know the size of the industry,” Assemblyman Guy Sattley said. “We don’t know what our costs are going to be.”

Claims that marijuana smell offensive go up in smoke, odor ruled nicer than garbage

The smell of marijuana is not inherently offensive, the Oregon Court of Appeals ruled on Wednesday. The court tossed out charges against a man who was convicted of crimes after an officer inspected his home when smelling the drug.

Comparing the smell of marijuana to perfume or pungent spices, the three-judge panel stated that pot could reasonably be considered offensive if its odor remains “very intense and persistent,” but that otherwise it doesn’t clear the threshold to become “physically offensive.”

Oregon lawmaker, in Maine, predicts feds will let states set marijuana laws

U.S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore., said he was still practically a “child legislator” when, in 1973, he joined other lawmakers voting to make Oregon the first state where marijuana possession earned the offender a civil citation rather than a criminal record and jail time.

Blumenauer was also among a smaller group of Oregon legislators who voted – unsuccessfully – to legalize possession of two marijuana plants for personal use.

“I am told that if the 19 of us that voted for it were joined by the people who voted ‘no’ but smoked dope, Oregon would have been the first state to legalize adult use” of marijuana, Blumenauer joked Thursday as he talked in what Mainers refer to as “the original Portland” about his decades of work on marijuana issues.

WHY IS NOBODY INVESTING IN NEW YORK'S BRAND-NEW MEDICAL-WEED INDUSTRY?

It turns out the so-called “green rush” that was expected in the wake of New York's legalization of medical marijuana may not be much of a rush after all.

America just admitted that cannabis DOES kill cancer cells - Metro

Conspiracy theorists have been saying it all along – but cannabis does apparently kill cancer cells.

That’s according to the US government, which has added a page on the use of cannabis and cannabinoids to their official cancer advice website.

The National Cancer Institute, part of the US Department of Health, now advises that ‘cannabinoids may be useful in treating the side effects of cancer and cancer treatment’ by smoking, eating it in baked products, drinking herbal teas or even spraying it under the tongue.
