Confusing State Marijuana Laws Lead to Unjust Raids

In July of 2014, the St. Clair County Drug Task Force (DTF) raided the home and business of Annette and Dale Shattuck, a couple who owned a medical marijuana dispensary in Kimball, Michigan.

The Shattucks were at their dispensary, DNA Wellness Center, when DTF agents arrested them, the Washington Post reported. Meanwhile, their four young children were playing at home under the supervision of their grandmother.

You're Probably Already Qualified For A Job In The Cannabis Industry

Not long ago, you 100 percent had to 'know a guy,' or a girl, in order to find work in the marijuana industry. Then, you had to watch patiently and do a lot of internet research, often under furtive, less-than-ideal conditions , before starting to actually make money.

But with 23 states and the District of Columbia legalizing marijuana in some form, and Canada poised to follow suit, the sketchy dealings formerly required to get a gig are as passé as the stigma around marijuana use. Working in the cannabis industry is increasingly like working anywhere else - and that includes the tedium of trawling through job postings.

Time To Stop Complaining and Get Involved

We receive a lot of inquiries (and some complaints) at NORML from those who favor legalization and wonder why we continue to focus on a state-based strategy instead of focusing on Congress. The belief is that Congress could legalize marijuana in one fell swoop if they wanted to do so.

It’s a reasonable question, but there are valid reasons for the current strategy.

Congress Is Not Yet In Play

There Might Be A Genetic Reason People Become Addicted To Marijuana

A new study identified specific genes that may make someone more likely to become dependent on marijuana.

Researchers at Yale University examined the genes of nearly 15,000 people to try to determine the relationship between genetics and addiction.

Between 18 percent and 36 percent of participants exhibited a dependency on marijuana, according to TIME. Previous research estimated 10 percent of marijuana users become addicted, but a high amount of marijuana addicts were used for this study to increase the chances of discovering associated genes.

Cannabis Stocks Rally More than 100% and Continue to Move Higher

Earlier this month, GW Pharmaceuticals (GWPH) reported positive results from the first Phase 3 Clinical study for its Epidiolex product and this has served as a catalyst for several publicly traded cannabis companies.

This rally can be described as nothing short of a volatile explosion upward as some of the stocks under our coverage are up more than 500% during the last two weeks.

The cannabis stock market has not seen this type of performance since the first quarter of 2014 and we continue to monitor over 100 cannabis stocks for trading opportunities.

A proposal that would create citywide caps on stores and grow houses to protect marijuana-saturated Denver neighborhoods cleared its first hurdle Monday.

But when the City Council introduces it on the floor April 11 and takes a final vote as early as April 18, the measure isn't guaranteed an easy ride.

Legal Marijuana Business Finds Its Footing, Despite Challenges

Heightened competition in the market for legal recreational weed is pushing prices down and firing up border wars across state lines. Competition is so steep in Washington state that cannabis revenue growth has slowed as Oregon ramps up its adult pot sales.

What's more, in Colorado and Oregon there's more interest from out-of-state investors entering the recreational pot business.

Then there's California, where voters will decide later this year whether to legalize recreational pot.

Yet, for all the interest, the marijuana business remains fraught with risks and capital challenges.
