Canada: Licensed medical grow-op operators face tough penalties

When a Markham father and son’s lease for the medical marijuana site they were maintaining expired, they were forced to get creative and move the operation to the town of Stayner, where the family owned a farm.

Despite having a valid licence from Health Canada to grow 1,025 plants — a limit to which they were adhering — and a lawyer’s letter in hand explaining their actions, their farm was busted by cops and the men were arrested in September 2015.

Zhangjian and Zheng Min Fan now face three years in prison.

Ontario unveils plan to allow up to 300 grocery stores to sell wine

Ontario plans to allow up to 300 grocery stores to sell wine across the province, starting with 70 locations slated to begin this fall, Premier Kathleen Wynne has announced.

"Imported and domestic wines will be sold at up to 150 grocery stores," the province said in a statement.

"As well, up to 150 existing winery retail stores that are currently just outside a grocery store checkout will be permitted to operate their store inside that grocery store, with a shared checkout, and broaden their assortment to sell the wines of any Ontario producer."

At a news conference Thursday in Toronto, Wynne said "people in Ontario will now be able to buy wine with their cheese."

BC: Langley medicinal marijuana advocate upset by removal from Mexico

A Langley medicinal marijuana advocate is worried he may not be able to travel abroad safely after he was abruptly ejected from Mexico.

Randy Caine worries that local controversy and opposition to his medical marijuana activism in Langley led to his being labelled a drug dealer by Mexican federal police.

Caine and his wife, Maureen, were on a trip to Puerto Vallarta in March of last year. When they landed, Caine was taken aside by Mexican federal police to an interrogation room, and asked about criminal activities, and if he had ever been arrested.

"They said I had been identified as a drug trafficker and a security threat," Caine said.

Caine was put on the same plane to return to Canada. Maureen had to arrange another flight to follow him.

Canada: Could the new senators take the high road and join the Marijuana Party? Totally

A new crop of senators will be chosen by a process designed to be merit-based and non-partisan, but how — and whether — they choose to organize themselves after they sit down in those plush red seats is still a mystery.

It is an unanswered question that, since the Senate writes its own rules and the Liberal government seems happy not to fill in the blanks for the time being, is open to all sorts of delightfully hypothetical speculation.

First 4 Vancouver marijuana dispensaries denied business licence appeals

Vancouver's board of variance has denied the first four appeals from marijuana dispensaries hoping to reverse the city's refusal to grant them a business licence.

In June 2015 Vancouver city council voted to regulate and license medical marijuana retailers, making it the first city in Canada to do so. But by late October, only six per cent of those who applied were successful.

Most of the shops had their licences denied because they were too close to schools, community centres, or other marijuana dispensaries.

"I'm hoping not everyone is putting their eggs in one basket, hoping the board of appeals will grant them their application," said Vancouver chief licensing inspector Andrea Toma.

Nova Scotia doctors worried about young people using medical marijuana

Some Nova Scotia doctors are concerned young people are receiving prescriptions to smoke medical marijuana, despite the effects marijuana has on the developing brain.

Currently, there are no laws in Canada regarding the age at which people can receive prescriptions for marijuana and different organizations have different recommendations.

The College of Family Physicians of Canada says cannabis is not appropriate for anyone under the age of 25, while the Canadian Paediatric Society and Health Canada both recommend cannabis not be consumed by anyone under the age of 18.

Risks of youth cannabis use

The brain isn't fully developed until 25 and frequent cannabis use can have serious consequences for youth.

Licence appeals begin for Vancouver marijuana dispensaries

Vancouver marijuana shops not offered business licences will appeal the city's decision in front of the board of variance beginning Wednesday.

In June 2015 Vancouver city council voted to regulate and license medical marijuana retailers, making it the first city in Canada to do so. But by late October, only six per cent of those who applied were successful.

Chuck Varabioff is the owner of the B.C. Pain Society on Commercial Drive, which had its licence application denied last year.

He says he's appealing because his society has many members, is close to SkyTrain, and has low prices.

Canada: Princess Margaret pulls prize home from lottery over legal marijuana pot farm

The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation has pulled a prize home in Markham from its lottery after discovering that a neighbouring homeowner has a Health Canada licence to grow marijuana for personal consumption.

The organization learned Friday that the prize house, at 39 Jeffrey Nihda Cres. in Markham, was on a street where there have been multiple complaints against the licensed pot farm.

“The growing of a large number of plants in the house has resulted in an intrusive odour in the neighbourhood,” the foundation said in a news release.

Watch: Legal marijuana market attracting growing field of savvy investors

WATCH ABOVE: As Angie Seth reports, we may be a few years away from marijuana becoming legal in Canada, but that is not swaying investors who are already looking to buy in.

The recently elected Liberal government has made few tangible moves to realize Justin Trudeau’s plans to legalize marijuana, but the mere prospect of legal pot has investors and business owners springing up like, well… weeds.

Leigh Coulter, the president of greenhouse company GGS Structures says the legal marijuana market started heating up the moment Trudeau’s Liberals won last October’s election.
