Liberals' pot plan looks for way to detect and deter drug-impaired driving

The man tasked with coming up with Canada's marijuana law has a proposal for dealing with one of the biggest issues facing legalization: prevention of driving under the influence of pot.

While police can conduct field sobriety tests if they suspect a driver is impaired by any substance, there is no established breathalyzer equivalent in roadside policing to easily detect and measure impairment when it comes to driving while high.

Liberal MP Bill Blair says oral fluids testing could be the roadside measure used by Canadian authorities to detect marijuana in a person's system.

"The kits are currently used in Europe," Blair told CBC News in an exclusive interview.

Cannabis Industry Unexpected Boost For Alberta's Struggling Economy

It's an unexpected shot in the arm for Alberta's struggling economy. And it's about as unlikely as it gets.

Alberta's only industrial-scale grower of medical marijuana, Aurora Cannabis, just served notice that business is booming. The company now has well over 2,000 customers, beginning from a standing start in January.

Prior to that, Aurora had to wait for the issuance of a sales licence from Health Canada. And that wasn't forthcoming until Aurora's crops had undergone extensive laboratory testing for quality control by an independent, licensed third party.

Cannabis's Unique Relationship with Anxiety

Information that could help you cope.

"I don’t like hallucinating anymore,” my partner lamented.

I hugged him and proceeded to take a bath. He curled up on the bed, smiling and staying warm.

“Can’t we just have some CBD and come down?” he mumbled through heavy birch walls.

After my bath I squirted a few droppers of Luminous Botanicals Earth Blend under his tongue, and watched him carefully as he swished it around like mouthwash, letting it rest in his mouth before swallowing it down. I swallowed two dropperfuls, too.

Toronto's marijuana crackdown follows heavy lobbying by legal pot producers

TORONTO — This week’s crackdown on illegal marijuana dispensaries in Toronto comes after an intense lobbying campaign by licensed pot producers, who became alarmed by the brazen growth of the black market and the threat it poses to the industry.

Dispensaries began receiving hand-delivered notices from police on Wednesday, reminding them that their businesses are unlawful and they could face significant fines. These actions came less than a week after Mayor John Tory issued a letter calling dispensaries to be reined in.

“This is a long time coming,” said Cam Battley, chair of the advocacy committee for Cannabis Canada, an industry association for licensed pot companies.

“We warned the municipal government last fall that things were getting out of hand.”

Vancouver: Costs for 420 Marijuana Protest Pegged at $148,000

A review of costs associated with the 420 marijuana protest event last month showed that it cost the city nearly $150,000.

A joint release from the city of Vancouver, the Vancouver park board and Vancouver park on Wednesday said that the unsanctioned, illegal marijuana events at Sunset Beach Park and the Vancouver Art Gallery on April 20 showed that additional resources were required to ensure the public’s safety because of the organizers’ decision to hold events at the two locations.

Costs included $99,400 for police, $24,000 for the park board, $13,600 for streets and sanitation, $6,900 for Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services, and $4,100 for traffic, special events and emergency management.

Toronto Targets Landlords in Pot-Shop Crackdown

The City of Toronto began its crackdown on the proliferation of illegal marijuana dispensaries on Wednesday, going after the owners of the properties rather than the sellers of the products.

Letters from the city and the Toronto Police Service were sent informing landlords of buildings that contain dispensaries that the shops violate local by-laws and the property owners are subject to stiff financial penalties. Until the city sent out the notices, operators of the dispensaries expected to be the ones facing fines, as much as $50,000.

Toronto Cannabis Entrepreneurs Vow to Fight Proposed Fines

On Tuesday night, the Cannabis Friendly Business Association held an emergency session at Toronto’s Hotbox Cafe. Entrepreneurs, consultants and lobbyists gathered to take on Mayor John Tory, who has vowed to fine unlicensed marijuana dispensaries up to $50,000 a day. It was standing-room only, and no one was taking this threat laying down.

All the tropes and trappings of the high life one might expect in this Kensington Market setting were in effect: berets, goatees, dreads, bongs and vapes, the air inexorably filled with suspicious wafts. But the fog wasn’t so thick that one couldn’t see that this energized group of entrepreneurs, consultants and lobbyists meant business.
