Donald Trump Presidency Will Give Canadian Pot Firms a 'Head Start'

Canada's medical-cannabis companies say their American counterparts will continue to be stifled under the upcoming Trump presidency, during which Canadian growers will scale up to meet the domestic demand for recreational pot while preparing to enter the U.S. market as global industry leaders once prohibition there ends.

Last Tuesday, voters in California, Massachusetts, Nevada and Maine legalized the sale of recreational marijuana, joining four western states and Washington, in allowing adults to use the drug. Florida, Arkansas, Montana and North Dakota also voted for medical cannabis, which is now supported by a total of 29 states.

No Easy Answers for Dealing with Medical Marijuana in the Workplace, Say B.C. Experts

A B.C. Human Rights Tribunal case involving a gymnastic coach suspended after co-workers claimed she was “stoned” at work when she used medical marijuana raises a difficult issue for employers, according to experts.

How do you balance the needs of an employee who requires medical marijuana with ensuring there is no “intoxication” at work, asks adjunct professor Mark Haden of the University of B.C.’s School of Population and Public Health.

“The real issue is impairment testing, and that’s hard to do right now. Urine analysis testing isn’t useful, since marijuana can be detected for 30 days — long after any psychological or physical effect has passed,” he said.

National policies on marijuana use are needed for the workplace, Haden said.

Canada Needs to Teach Drivers About Cannabis Impairment: CAA

CAA-funded study suggests marijuana legalization will pose ‘incredible challenges’ for managing pot-impaired drivers.

The Canadian Automobile Association is lobbying for a government-funded public education program to warn of the dangers of cannabis-impaired driving before Canada legalizes recreational pot.

Police will also need more funding to learn how to recognize and investigate drug-impaired drivers, says the CAA.

The Liberal government has promised to introduce legislation legalizing recreational marijuana next spring and a committee report on the process is expected at the end this month.

Canadian LCBO Launches Innovation Hub in Kitchener to Explore New Technology

The Liquor Control Board of Ontario, the government agency that manages alcohol sales across the province, is tapping into Kitchener-Waterloo’s startup community as it seeks to modernize the way it interacts with customers at its retail stores.

Even though the LCBO already has an innovation lab at its downtown Toronto headquarters, the scope of development there has been limited because of what the LCBO admits is a lagging approach to problem-solving.

Canadian Marijuana Stocks Soar Following California Legalization

Already setting new record highs for months, shares of Canadian marijuana stocks have reached lofty new territories after California voted to legalize marijuana.

On Tuesday, while many were mulling the shocking surge to the White House by Donald Trump, the state of California passed Proposition 64, which will allow residents 21 years and older to buy and possess up to one ounce of cannabis for recreational purposes and to grow up to six marijuana plants for personal use. The new measure will create an environment for state-licensed businesses to set up retail marijuana sales. With a proposed 15 per cent sales tax, the state is expected to take in an added $1 billion in tax revenue from legalization.

Canada Could Thrive from Marijuana Legalization in US States

Brendan Kennedy, the CEO of Privateer Holdings, says he expects Canadian producers will enter into partnerships and joint ventures with their neighbours.

Canada’s marijuana industry could benefit after at least six states representing twice the population of Canada voted in favour of legalizing the drug, either recreationally or medically.

Voters in California, Massachusetts and Nevada approved on Tuesday the use of recreational cannabis, joining four other states and Washington, D.C., that have similar laws in place.

Florida, North Dakota and Arkansas approved medical marijuana, which would bring the total number of states with such a system to more than two dozen.
