Marijuana producer Canopy Growth being added to S&P/TSX composite index

Canopy Growth Corporation is being added to the influential S&P/TSX Composite Index in another milestone for Canada’s fledgling marijuana industry.

The cannabis producer will be added to the index’s health-care sector prior to the start of trading on March 20, S&P Dow Jones Indices said late on Friday. It said it will be the first marijuana company to join the index.

Big institutional investors and index funds use the index to guide buying decisions, so being included can lead to more demand for a stock. Canopy shares were up 2.2 per cent at $11.07 late on Monday.

The Canadian Correction: We Called It

On the last day of February, as valuations were looking frothy, we sounded the alarm on Canadian cannabis stocks and decreased our leverage to the sector.

Although this decision did not initially sit well with Technical420 Premium Members, those who listened were quite pleased. As we did not completely exit the Canadian cannabis sector, we were able to realize gains on our largest holdings (Aphria, Canopy, OrganiGram and Aurora).

When this decision was announced, we highlighted our intention to re-invest in these companies and explained that these moves were part of our overall investing strategy (i.e. accepting gains over 100% or greater).

Canadian medical-marijuana group to implement new health, safety standards

The largest association of medical-marijuana companies in Canada has agreed to implement new standards on product safety and transparency, after a series of recalls due to banned pesticides that have shaken consumer confidence in the industry.

Directors of the Cannabis Canada Association, which represents 15 federally licensed medical-marijuana companies – including several of the country’s biggest – voted unanimously in favour of the new health and safety standards at a board meeting Thursday.

The stricter measures include independent lab testing for banned pesticides, bacteria, mould, heavy metals and other contaminants, and – most importantly – disclosing those results to consumers.
