Liberals Set to Table Marijuana Legislation, but Key Details Need to Be Resolved

The federal government will table a bill to legalize recreational marijuana on Thursday that is expected to tightly control the ability of producers to market their products to the public, federal sources said.

But key issues such as how to deal with drug-impaired driving have yet to be fully resolved.

The government has indicated its legislation will be highly restrictive and designed to discourage people from consuming marijuana, especially under the age of 18. The bill is expected to include tough penalties for those who provide marijuana to children and teens, sources said.

“The goal will not simply be to legalize marijuana, but also to prevent youth from having access to it,” a senior official said.

Joints by Snoop Dogg or White Label Cannabis? Government Ponders Ad Restrictions for Pot

The elegant white box shipped from the Tweed Inc. medical marijuana plant in Smiths Falls is stamped with a gold cannabis leaf that signals the dried bud inside is endorsed by Snoop Dogg himself.

The rapper who once boasted of smoking 80 blunts a day has a partnership with Tweed that helps both parties: Snoop promotes his Leafs by Snoop cannabis line and Tweed benefits from an association with “the world’s most renowned cannabis connoisseur,” as Tweed describes Snoop.

Tweed is poised to jump into the recreational market, and the marketing deal with Snoop Dogg was a major coup.

Cannabis Investors: What Happens If Canadians Decide to Go DIY?

Investors in marijuana companies such as Canopy Growth Corp. (TSX:WEED) are betting big on the creation of a legal recreational market in Canada.

Let?s take a look the current situation to see if this is a good time to own these stocks.

Scary valuations

Valuations for marijuana companies are far beyond reason, given the current state of the market.

For example, medical marijuana market leader Canopy Growth reported revenue of about $10 million for the quarter ended December 31, 2016. The company continues to expand at a healthy rate, but that simply isn?t enough to justify a market capitalization of $1.6 billion.

Marijuana Researcher Hopes Legalization Will Open Door to More Study

The number of prescriptions for medical marijuana has gone from 4,000 to 130,000 in just a few years. The Liberal government is about to table a bill that will legalize pot by July 1, 2018. The provinces are gearing up to manage the sale of the stuff.

Meanwhile, hundreds of businesses are springing up. And everyone is talking about a green gold rush.

And yet, very little is known about the long-term health effects of cannabis, says McGill University scientist Mark Ware. He’s determined to find out more as the clock ticks down to legalization.

He has embarked on one of the largest studies ever done on pot. So far it has recruited more than 1,000 participants. He hopes to have 3,000 within two years.

Liberals want to move up pot legalization to avoid Canada Day celebrations

With long-awaited marijuana legislation set to be announced next week, the federal government is having second thoughts about legalizing cannabis on Canada Day.

The Trudeau government still plans to go ahead with its plan to make weed legal for recreational use. But a senior government source says the initial target of July 1, 2018 as the implementation date will be changed to "on or before July 1, 2018."

The change reflects some internal concerns over legalizing a recreational drug on the country's birthday. Bill Blair, the Liberal government's point man on pot, told the Canadian Press he wanted the focus of Canada Day to be Canada — not cannabis.

Last standing former Cannabis Culture dispensary set to close doors

The so-called “prince and princess of pot” Marc and Jodie Emery confirmed that the last of the former Cannabis Culture dispensaries will close its doors this weekend.

Jodie Emery told CP24 that the last standing shop located at 461 Church Street will shut down after being a frequent target of police raids.

There used to be a total of seven Cannabis Culture locations throughout Toronto. The dispensaries were selling marijuana without a medical prescription, which is against the law, at least until recreational marijuana is legalized by the government, a move expected to happen in 2018.
