PEI medicinal marijuana company adds 'discreet' option

P.E.I.'s medicinal marijuana company is adding cannabis oil to its product lines.

Edwin Jewell, president of Canada's Island Garden, said not everyone who uses medicinal marijuana wants to smoke or vape it.

Cannabis oil allows them to put it in their food or drink.

'There's still a stigma attached, I think, in many parts of Canada with people who smoke cannabis.' - Edwin Jewell

"I think the benefit to oils is people can then take their medicinal cannabis in a way that is a little more discreet," Jewell said.

Medical marijuana middlemen in Canada: How specialty clinics cash in on legal prescriptions

Across Canada, specialty medical clinics are making money within the government's legal medical marijuana regime by acting as middlemen between doctors, patients and licensed marijuana producers.

The clinics are in the business of taking referrals from doctors and arranging consultations with physicians who assess potential patients and write prescriptions for those who qualify. Clinic staff then educate those patients on how to use medical marijuana, and register them with the licensed medical marijuana producers who will ultimately provide the patients with legal cannabis by mail.

Some of the clinics also receive money from those licensed producers, raising questions about medical ethics and transparency.

Marijuana May Be a Miracle Treatment for Children with Autism

When Noa Shulman came home from school, her mother, Yael, sat her down to eat, then spoon-fed her mashed sweet potatoes — mixed with cannabis oil.

Noa, who has a severe form of autism, started to bite her own arm. “No sweetie,” Yael gently told her 17-year-old daughter. “Here, have another bite of this.”

Noa is part of the first clinical trial in the world to test the benefits of medicinal marijuana for young people with autism, a potential breakthrough that would offer relief for millions of afflicted children — and their anguished parents.

5 Things Trudeau’s Cannabis Interview Made Clear

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau sat down Monday with reporters and staffers from Vice for a live interview about the recently introduced legislation to legalize cannabis. Over the course of an hour, he fielded questions—including from celebrities like Seth Rogan and cannabis activists like Jodie Emery—about what the changes will mean for the country.

Here are five key takeaways from the discussion:

Tiverton Cannabis Plant in Ontario Means Millions in Investment and Hundreds of Local Jobs

Federal government plans to legalize recreational adult marijuana means multi-millions in investments and hundreds of jobs for Saugeen Shores area residents according to John Fowler, founder and CEO of Supreme Pharmaceutical/7ACRES, a licensed medical marijuana cultivation operation in Tiverton.

Fowler briefed Saugeen Shores councillors on the current growth spurt at his facility at the April 24 town committee of the whole meeting in Port Elgin.

Fowler was introduced by Port Elgin BIA (Business Improvement Area) chair Jeff Carver who announced 7ACRES as a title sponsor of this year's BIA Farm to Table dinner, with a $2,500 donation and a booth at the weekly Farmer's Market.

Despite Special Regulations, Entrepreneurs Hope to Take Bite of Canada's Marijuana Edibles Market

Mom and pop edible makers 'deserve a piece of legalization,' says organizer of pop-up marijuana food market.

Amid all the uncertainty about the federal government's plans to legalize marijuana by mid-2018, a culinary mystery stands out: How will marijuana-infused food products, commonly called "edibles," fit into the legal regime?

Ottawa has signalled that regulations governing the sales of edibles won't be ready by the time recreational marijuana becomes legal. But if the huge demand for edibles at 420 celebrations in Toronto's pot-friendly Kensington Market is any indication, the government needs to start cooking up those regulations, and fast.

Mulcair Slams Trudeau For 'Abject Hypocrisy' On Pot Charges

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau smoked marijuana as an MP but he has not suffered the same consequences as Canadians who are slapped with simple pot charges, NDP Leader Tom Mulcair said Tuesday — an example, he says, of "abject hypocrisy."

Mulcair took aim at Trudeau for his assertion that he wants to make things fairer for those facing pot-possession charges once marijuana becomes legal next year — a comment he made during a segment with Vice Canada on Monday.

The NDP has repeatedly called for an amnesty on charges for possessing small amounts of pot, but nothing has been done.

Trudeau doesn't seem to care about Canadians who face charges, even though a plan is in place to revoke the prohibition, Mulcair said during a news conference.
