No Pot for Pets in Ontario, Says Health Canada

Office of Medical Cannabis declares animals not protected by ACMPR regulations.

While membership applications surge for licensed producers across Canada, another trend is emerging simultaneously in the world of medical cannabis—owners and guardians of pets with severe medical conditions have been finding success in treating their furry family members’ symptoms through the use of CDB oil. But recent dialogue between the College of Veterinarians of Ontario and the Office of Medical Cannabis at Health Canada has concluded that for the time being, pets will have to suffer without the benefits of cannabis treatments.

Quebec: Alimentation Couche-Tard Keen on Selling Cannabis in Convenience Stores

Alimentation Couche-Tard is expressing interest in selling cannabis in its Quebec convenience stores.

The company has hired a lobbyist to work on ensuring it has a place in the cannabis-distribution system Quebec will eventually set up.

The province's official registry of lobbyists shows Marie-Eve Bedard began working on behalf of Couche-Tard (TSX:ATD.B) last month and will continue doing so until next May.

She will earn less than $10,000 for her work.

Bedard is a former chief of staff to ex-Quebec health minister Yves Bolduc.

Couche-Tard operates more than 2,000 stores in Canada but it is not clear whether the chain wants to sell cannabis outside of Quebec.

Startup Seeks to Modernize Grow Ops as Canada Set to Legalize Pot

Question: When is a datacentre not a datacentre?

Answer: When it’s growing pot.

Smart datacentre managers use technology to regulate power consumption and productivity. Paolo Pincente, CEO of Grow Ratio, is basing his business on the fact that cannabis grow-ops work the same way.

Pincente comes from an IT background, having sold his managed IT services business pNetworks in 2015. Now, he wants to bring the same efficiencies found in high-performance datacentres into licensed grow-ops.

Say Hello to the Largest North American Marijuana Stock IPO of All Time

This Canadian medical pot producer just raised $75 million, placing its value at more than $635 million.

Depending on your source, the marijuana industry is set to grow by between 23% and 27% annually over the next 5 to 10 years, with investment firm Cowen & Co. offering the most bullish prediction, with a call for $50 billion in legal U.S. sales by 2026.

Aurora Cannabis Inc.: Is a Hemp Investment a Strategic Fit?

Aurora Cannabis Inc. (TSXV:ACB) has just announced another possible acquisition, and this time the vicious and highly aggressive marijuana underdog is snatching a 19.9% stake in one of the world’s largest industrial hemp producers, Hempco Food and Fiber Inc. (TSXV:HEMP), and could potentially  increase its stake to 50.1% of the target on a fully diluted basis.

Marijuana sector leaders say they've met with TMX Group to discuss US investments

Marijuana industry insiders say they have met with the operators of Canada's largest stock exchange to devise a policy on investing in the U.S., where growing and selling cannabis violates federal laws.

Lawyers who work with publicly traded Canadian marijuana producers say there is an unwritten rule that companies traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange or the TSX Venture Exchange are not permitted to have investments in the U.S. cannabis sector.

TMX Group — the company that operates both the TSX and Venture Exchange — is now looking to codify that policy, particularly given the uncertainty since stemming from the change in administration in the U.S., according to industry observers.

How big is the marijuana stock opportunity in cannabidiol?

A lot of progress is being made on understanding how marijuana's chemical cannabinoids can be used as medicine, and among the most intriguing of these cannabinoids is cannabidiol, or CBD. It's one of at least 113 active cannabinoids found in marijuana, it's not responsible for marijuana's "high," and it accounts for roughly 40% of the marijuana plant's extract.

At the forefront of research into CBD's use as medicine is GW Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:GWPH), a U.K. drug developer that already markets a tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)-derived drug in Europe for the treatment of muscle spasms in multiple sclerosis patients.

Newfoundland opens survey on marijuana legislation

The provincial government is seeking public input on new marijuana legislation set to come into effect in little over a year.

Justice Minister Andrew Parsons says government has launched a website to allow people to have their say on what they’d like to see.

He says questions include age restrictions, where it should be sold, and what other restrictions are necessary once the use of marijuana is legalized.

What Parsons calls “targeted stakeholders” will be separately surveyed.

They will include the medical community and business interests. He uses the age restrictions as an example, whereby they weigh what the public thinks is a good age, against medical evidence.

The online survey, which will be open until June 30.

NWT communities not ready for legal marijuana, says Sahtu MLA

There are more questions than answers as the Government of the Northwest Territories readies itself to introduce new cannabis legislation within the year, in light of federal marijuana legalization.

But one thing is certain for Danny McNeely, MLA for the Sahtu.

"They're not ready," McNeely said. "There has never been any community consultation other than social media articles that have been exposed via the paper, or other means, [like] on Facebook."

What about prohibition?

Some small communities in the N.W.T. have strict alcohol prohibitions or restrictions in place.
