Saskatchewan Canada opens cannabis wholesale permits

The Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority is now accepting applications for wholesale cannabis permits and licensed producers. There is no limit in the province on the number of wholesale permits, but those permittees can only sell to retailers and not to the general public.

Wholesale permit fees run $5,000, including a $2,000 non-refundable application fee and a $3,000 annual fee. The registration fee for federally-licensed producers is $2,000, including a $500 non-refundable application fee and a $1,500 annual permit fee.

Nova Scotia appeals court delivers a blow to medical cannabis

Medical cannabis advocates suffered a major setback April 12, when the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal overturned a ruling that an injured man’s legally prescribed medical cannabis must be covered by his union’s trust fund.

The court decided that the Canadian Elevator Industry Welfare Trust Fund’s refusal to cover the medication for Gordon Wayne Skinner was not due to discrimination, as the Nova Scotia Human Rights Board of Inquiry had found.

In a press release, Skinner described the decision as “devastating. My own union is doing everything [it] can to deny coverage of the only medication that works for me, while myself and my family are left to suffer,” he said.

Hamilton councilors looking at ways to target landlords to evict pot dispensaries

Hamilton councillors want the city and the province to get tougher with landlords who rent space to owners of pot dispensaries.

Since early this year Hamilton police have been cracking down on illegal storefront pot shops across the city. As of January, there were about 46 illegal marijuana dispensaries in Hamilton. As of last October, police had raided, seized product and laid charges against 10 outlets, with most of them reopening soon after.

Those raids included two in Stoney Creek. But one pot dispensary at the corner of Highway 8 and DeWitt Road continues to operate, even though it is down the street from Orchard Park High School and across the street from the Oxford Learning Centre.

MMJ funds Canadian medical marijuana retail firm Fire & Flower Inc.

MMJ Phytotech has made reportedly made investments worth CAD 1 million (around AUD 1.02 million) in Fire & Flower Inc., a major cannabis retail firm headquartered in Canada. The strategic move has resulted in MMJ receiving 1.25 million shares from Fire & Flower at nearly 80 Canadian cents per share, thereby acquiring a paltry stake in the firm. If sources are to be believed, Canadian authorities are likely to legalize the use of medical marijuana for recreational purposes.

Liberal party members overwhelmingly vote for decriminalizing drugs while Trudeau repeats opposition

The Liberal Party of Canada has voted in favour of removing criminal penalties for the personal possession of drugs.

It’s one of a number of policies that the party selected as priorities at a convention in Halifax on Saturday (April 21).

Members also voted in favour of universal pharmacare, decriminalizing consensual sex work, and expanding medicare to cover mental-health issues.

A total of 15 policies were selected to become official party priorities.

However, a policy’s status as a party priority does not mean that party leaders have to include it in the document where it really counts: the party’s campaign platform for the next federal election.

The company that started a medical marijuana grow-op near Petrolia is branching out into some “Lambton County Gold” for the adult fun market.

A new subsidiary of Tilray Inc., High Park Farms, has been granted a federal licence to grow recreational marijuana at its greenhouse operation in Enniskillen Township.

The company said it will begin growing plants under glass this week and anticipates a first harvest in June.

“This license is a major milestone for High Park as we work to prepare for the anticipated launch of the world’s largest federally legal cannabis market later this year,” said chief marketing officer Adine Carter.
