Timmins is first venue in Canada with UPside Down House

Have you seen it?

That’s what people at Stars and Thunder are asking in connection with that unusual house that looks like a leftover from a Kansas windstorm.

The upside down house is actually a clever marketing ploy and Timmins is the first place in Canada where it is being showcased by UP Cannabis Inc., a Canadian company that produces cannabis. UP Cannabis is one of the corporate sponsors for Stars and Thunder.

P.M. Rendon, the company’s Director, Communications and Public Relations said the house represents the changing perspective for legalized marijuana with the recent passage of Bill C45 in the Senate

Mi'kmaq First Nation wants to partner with Rebabliati to sell pot

A Nova Scotia Mi'kmaq community is already talking with entrepreneur Ross Rebagliati about opening a retail cannabis store.

“We’re looking at legacy becoming part of the Mi'kmaq nation world moving forward,” Rebagliati told CTV Atlantic on Wednesday.

This fall, on Oct. 17, it will be legal to buy and use non-medical cannabis in Canada, but the provincial government has said the only storefronts that will be able to sell it are its own NSLC locations.

But Rebagliati, a former Olympic snowboarder and cannabis entrepreneur, says his company, Legacy Brands, has an agreement with the Sipene’katik First Nation in Shubenacadie to set up its own cannabis growing operation and a storefront later this year.

Former BC premier warns against change to proportional representation

Former British Columbia premier Ujjal Dosanjh is urging voters to say No to a referendum on proportional representation because he believes it will usher in extremist parties like those in some European countries.

Dosanjh says Germany, the Netherlands and Hungary require very low percentages of people to vote in candidates with racist views, and that has changed their political landscape in a negative way.

The former New Democrat premier says the party he once led is proposing a proportional representation system that would allow five per cent of voters to elect extremist members of the legislature.

More education and awareness needed as new drug-impaired driving rules take effect July 1

As new drug-impaired driving rules take effect in Ontario July 1st, CAA South Central Ontario (CAA SCO) is reminding motorists of the dangers, fines and penalties of drug-impaired driving.

As of July 1, 2018, under Ontario's Highway Traffic Act, tougher penalties will take effect for young and novice drivers who have alcohol in their system and will add matching penalties for drugs. There are also new penalties for commercial vehicle drivers who have the presence of alcohol or drugs in their system.

In search of cannabis product liability coverage

Brokers looking to place product liability policies for cannabis vendors might face an uphill battle.

The cannabis industry “desperately” needs access to the same coverage that insurers already provide to non-cannabis businesses in agriculture pharmaceutical or manufacturing, said Wendy Sinclair, managing director of Jones Brown Inc., in a recent interview.

A bill making it legal for Canadians to possess and share up to 30 grams of dried cannabis for recreational use was passed into law June 21. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has reportedly said recreational marijuana will be legal in Canada, effective Oct. 17, 2018.

NB's predicted pot revenue has gone up in smoke

People won't be smoking legalized cannabis for another four months - but the New Brunswick government says millions in revenue from cannabis sales has already gone up in smoke.

The original plan was for sales to start July 1, but the delay will cost the provincial government and it’s affecting jobs in the cannabis stores.

Now that we know Oct. 17 will be day for legal weed, other things are becoming clearer, too.

“Although it has never been the main focus, the delay in implementation will impact our revenue projections,” said New Brunswick Finance Minister Cathy Rogers.

The provincial budget in January indicated an expectation of $7.2 million in revenue between Canada Day and the end of fiscal year.

Ontario presses cannabis suppliers to cut prices

Ontario’s cannabis retailing arm is putting pressure on some growers to reduce prices as the province strives to ensure marijuana on its shelves will be cheap enough to compete with the illicit market.

In talks with producers to determine which companies will supply the recreational market, officials for the Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS) are pushing for some strains of flower to be available to consumers at a retail price of about $7.50 a gram, including taxes, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Of landlords and legal pot: Province charts course for tenancy restrictions

Landlords will be able to restrict smoking and cultivation of legalized cannabis in their residential properties, according to the New Brunswick government.

Tenancy issues were among several topics provincial officials addressed in Fredericton on Thursday, a week and a half after the senate passed the federal government's bill legalizing recreational marijuana.

Pot will become legal to consume and grow in private dwellings on Oct. 17.

Kim Snow, the province's chief residential tenancies officer, said she has been speaking with concerned landlords who wish to prohibit cultivation and smoking.

They will get their wish, she said. Landlords can include those terms in new leases.

New reality of legalized marijuana is still hazy

AS the legalization of marijuana approaches, there are still unanswered questions, including the effectiveness of roadside drug testing and what prices will be.

It was originally slated to come into force on Canada Day, but after much wrangling, Oct. 17, 2018, will go down in history as the day the recreational weed prohibition died in this country. With the passage of Bill C-45, it will be legal to buy and consume it.

Why you won't be able to explore the pot of the world at your local cannabis store

Even a small liquor store offers something of a tour of the world, with wine from six or eight countries at least.

Quebec’s SAQ’s spirits alone are sourced from 61 different countries, and wine from 34.
