Marijuana odour complaints on the rise in Metro Vancouver

Metro Vancouver’s municipal leaders are bracing for a significant increase in odour complaints when marijuana is legalized this fall.

This follows a sudden spike in the number of complaints the regional district has received involving a legal commercial cannabis grow operation that recently started operating in Langley.

“Here we have a new industry that’s in its infancy in terms of being legal, and now it’s out in the open and it needs to be dealt with like any other industry. They’re not going away,” said Township of Langley Mayor Jack Froese.

Why marijuana legalization could give medicinal sales a boost too

Marijuana legislation was passed earlier this year and recreational pot sales are expected to commence in mid-October, and while medical marijuana has been legalized for some time now, it too could benefit from the new law. It’s not as if companies are struggling to sell medical marijuana, but legalization will make it easier for patients and those looking for the benefits of cannabidiol to get easier access to cannabis. Canopy Growth Corp. (TSX:WEED)(NYSE:CGC) and others in the industry have had to rely on medicinal sales so far, and while there has been grown in that segment, there’s clearly much…

Legal cannabis suppositories are coming to Canada, but with strict potency limits

At the Village Bloomery cannabis dispensary in Vancouver, Andrea Dobbs sometimes meets clients in search of a heavy dose of THC to ease the strain of cancer treatments or the pain of endometriosis.

If the client is new to cannabis, or physically frail, Dobbs might suggest cannabis suppositories, inserted directly into the rectum or vagina.

Medical marijuana users worry Canada’s pot-impaired driving rules will run them off the road

Spruce Grove, Alta., resident Darryl Kolewaski, who takes medical marijuana for arthritis, said his THC levels are consistently more than 10 times higher than that threshold.

“When I wake up in the morning, after not medicating since the night before I went to bed, I wake up with 25 nanograms in my blood. So that’s a huge concern to me if they’re swabbing you,” Kolewaski said.

“Later in the day, I’ve gone as high as 70 or 80 nanograms — none of that, however, being (impairing) to me. I’m not unable to operate or function. I can function completely normally.”

How marijuana legalization will affect the workplace

Partner and chair of the Employment and Labour Group at Gardiner Roberts LLP, author of the Halsbury’s Laws of Canada volume on Employment Law and the volume on Discrimination and Human Rights

This October, the legal, social and political landscapes of Canada will change dramatically when the purchase of recreational cannabis becomes legal. The latest data suggest roughly one in 10 Canadians were cannabis users in the past year, meaning few workplaces across the country will not be affected.

With employers still grappling with the complexity of managing addiction in the workplace as it pertains to alcohol and other drugs, the legalization of pot will add another hurdle.

Could legalization in October propel this cannabis ETF?

The Horizons Marijuana Life Sciences ETF (TSX:HMMJ) was down 1.21% in early afternoon trading on August 7. Cannabis stocks have been battered since recreational legalization was made official in late June. The federal government set the date of October 17 for this to come into effect.

The Horizons Marijuana Life Sciences ETF has dropped 14% in 2018 so far. Valuations for the largest cannabis producers in Canada have soared since the Liberal government came to power in 2015, partly on the back of a promise to push for legalization.
