Uber-style cannabis delivery service hopes to launch in Edmonton, Calgary

An Edmonton business hopes to cash in on the lucrative cannabis market by launching an Uber-style delivery service for medical and recreational users. But whether the business will be allowed to operate in Alberta is still up in the air.

Called Save the Drive, the business is set to launch a mobile application when cannabis becomes legal Oct. 17.

CEO Chanel Graham sees a need for the service among medical users who are homebound, can't drive, or among recreational users who are intoxicated and unable to drive.

"This is something that would be needed and in demand in Canada," Graham said. "And it's something that we can offer to keep drivers off the road."

Legal marijuana to create thousands of new jobs in Canada, from scientific research to lab analysts

Canada’s budding marijuana industry is set for rapid job growth as recreational use will become legal in October.

A flourishing weed business has led more and more Canadians to search for opportunities in the sector. Job hunting related to pot has more than quadrupled compared to a year ago, The Globe and Mail reported last week. For instance, in the province of Saskatchewan, marijuana grow-ops, distribution centers, warehouses and retail stores will likely create about 700 new jobs by the time recreational use is officially legalized this fall, CBC reported.

Consider health benefits, workplace policies as legal cannabis approaches

On Oct. 17, 2018, it will be legal to purchase and consume recreational cannabis in Canada.

In a recent survey of Mercer’s employer clients and Canadian employees, we found 78 per cent of respondents believe the legalization of recreational cannabis is a concern for human resources leaders. In addition, nearly half (45 per cent) of respondents believe it’s a concern for the C-Suite more broadly, and nearly 40 per cent believe it’s a concern for boards. When considering the scope of the changes that will be required to adjust to legalization, these findings aren’t surprising.

Ontario's grey-market cannabis businesses chart paths to regulation

Business-owner Don Briere says he is about to secure leases on several storefronts across Toronto to fuel an aggressive expansion of his B.C.-based Weeds Glass and Gifts chain, which lists four locations as currently operating in Ottawa and Vancouver.

Ontario’s dispensary operators are facing an existential dilemma: Shut down in the hopes of securing a coveted cannabis retail licence from the province by next April or continue selling a drug they say should be made easily available now more than ever.

Is Canopy Growth Corp. (TSX:WEED) stock a buy after 40% jump?

It seems there is nothing that can stop Canopy Growth Corp. (TSX:WEED)(NYSE:CGC) from reaching new heights. The latest surprise came when Corona beer-maker Constellation Brands Inc. (NYSE:STZ) announced last week that it would inject another $5-billion in Canada’s cannabis producer, increasing its stake to 38%.

Constellation Brands’ new investment follows an initial purchase of about a 10% stake last year. This development has many positive dimensions for the Canopy Growth that’s working to establish its dominant position in both medical and recreational marijuana markets globally.

Why these patients, retailers and researchers say Canada shouldn't drop medical cannabis post-legalization

Some researchers, patient advocates and industry professionals say Canada needs to maintain a distinct medicinal cannabis system following legalization of marijuana for recreational use, despite the Canadian Medical Association's position that doctors should no longer be gatekeepers.

"It is simply a reality now that cannabis is part of the medical landscape," said James MacKillop, director of the Peter Boris Centre for Addictions Research and the Michael G. DeGroote Centre for Medicinal Cannabis Research at McMaster University in Hamilton.

"I think we need to address that reality head-on as opposed to sort of walking away from the reality at this point."

Legal pot will mean a boom in Canadian cannabis research

For decades in Canada, cannabis has been a controlled substance in the eyes of the government and as tough for legitimate scientists to obtain as other illegal drugs.

Scientists and researchers must obtain an exemption from Health Canada’s Controlled Drugs and Substances Act to use cannabis for research purposes that include analytical and genetic testing in controlled environments and administration to animals or humans in a clinical trial.
