‘Supply chain issues’ contributing to early cannabis shortfall: Aphria CEO

“I’ve been communicating this (to the provincial regulators) for several months now leading up to Oct. 17. I’ve said all along that if you want X kilos from Aphria, I cannot make that promise until the spring of 2019, so here’s what we can deliver,” Aphria chief executive Vic Neufeld told the Financial Post.

Aphria has supply agreements with all 10 provinces and Yukon. In a Sept. 20 press release, the Leamington Ont.-based producer said that it had “begun shipping initial product orders” to ensure that an “extensive range of products will be available to consumers on Oct. 17.”

Canada says there will be enough marijuana to meet demand

The Canadian government is confident there will be enough marijuana to pass around despite concerns of a looming supply shortage as the nation rolls out legal sales next week.

Canada is “well positioned” to supply cannabis as the country transitions to a legal market on Oct. 17, with 66 licensed producers given the go-ahead to sell marijuana, said Mathieu Filion, a spokesman for Health Minister Ginette Petitpas Taylor. More than 160 expansions or modifications of existing facilities have been approved since June 2017 and the government estimates the nation’s licensed growers have in excess of 11 million square feet of space as of the end of June, including space for cultivation and office space and storage.

Investors could help Canada's cannabis industry improve its social and environmental record, experts say

Investors who've shied away from cannabis out of concern about whether legalization will be good for Canada should consider buying in to help shape the industry and how it operates, say experts in so-called impact investing.

While there's been no shortage of excitement around pot stocks as the legalization of recreational cannabis use approaches on Oct. 17, uncertainty around issues such as the legal implications around crossing the U.S. border have kept major players out of the game, said Vinay Shandal, managing director of the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) in Toronto.

3 Canadian marijuana stocks with a new license to sell

Today we have identified three Canadian marijuana stocks that have recently received a license to sell cannabis-based products in Canada.

This positions these small-cap companies to produce and sell their product just in time for recreational legalization in Canada, scheduled for October 17, 2018.

Although there is a long list of Canadian companies involved in the cannabis business, the number of companies with a sales license is much smaller, and so these companies have a significant advantage once recreational consumption becomes legal.

OMA president's comments, apology raise questions about stigma around marijuana

With legalization of recreational marijuana only days away, a leading Ontario doctor is backtracking after she voiced uncertainty around its safety.

Dr. Nadia Alam, president of the Ontario Medical Association, apologized Saturday after suggesting that smoking a joint could act as a gateway to harder drugs in a Thursday CBC Radio interview.

"What I would say is that I misspoke, I misunderstood," she told CBC Toronto Saturday. Alam woke up to a flurry of backlash on social media Saturday morning after a London Morning segment on her stance regarding the side-effects of recreational marijuana aired Thursday.

Health Canada announces approach to cost recovery for cannabis regulation

The Cannabis Act will come into force on October 17, 2018. The Act aims to keep cannabis out of the hands of Canadian youth and the profits away from criminals and organized crime.

Since it introduced the legislation, the Government of Canada has committed to fully recovering the costs of regulating the cannabis industry. Cost recovery ensures that those who benefit from the new legal market will pay the costs of regulating cannabis, which will reduce the cost to Canadians. The Ministerial Order authorizing cost recovery for the regulation of cannabis and the new fees will come into force on October 17, 2018, in conjunction with the Cannabis Act.

Cronos Group (NASDAQ:CRON) stock jumped 12.6% in September, according to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence.

Over the past year, the stock is up a whopping 307%, versus the broader market's 15.3% return.

Too high to drive? Enforcement of drug-impaired driving in Ontario could face roadblocks similar to those encountered in Colorado

If you could look into a crystal ball to see the future of drug-impaired driving on Ontario roads come October 17, you might see Colorado.

Since cannabis was legalized there four years ago, statistics on marijuana and driving compiled by the state found that more than 20 per cent of drivers involved in fatal accidents had some level of cannabis in their system.

And a survey this year of more than 15,000 cannabis users in the state found that nearly 70 per cent of them had driven under the influence of marijuana at least once in the past year. Forty per cent of them said they didn’t think it affected their ability to drive.
