Regulations make marijuana banking more costly, banker says

Regulations and paperwork are driving up costs for financial institutions serving marijuana companies doing business in states with legal pot sales, a cannabis banker told a conference in Las Vegas.

Sundie Seefried told hundreds of cannabis trade show attendees at MJBizCon last week that a subsidiary of her Colorado credit union had to file more than 7,000 reports with regulators on behalf of 220 cannabis-related member companies.

She compared that with 226 reports required for 33,000 regular members of her Partner Colorado Credit Union.

“When you ask me why banking is expensive — what you are really paying for are all the bodies it takes to file 7,000 reports,” she said.

Canadians spent $5.9 billion on cannabis in Q3

Statistics Canada says Canadian spending on cannabis rose 1.1 per cent to roughly $5.9 billion on an annualized basis in the third quarter.

Nearly 84 per cent of purchases were illegal and for non-medical use, down from 98 per cent in mid-2014 as cannabis consumption for medical use has increased.

The agency estimates that of the $4.9 billion in illegal, non-medical pot purchases in the third quarter, roughly 1.9 per cent came from home production.

About $836 million was spent on medical cannabis during the period, including $88 million of personal production.

Household spending on cannabis has increased for six consecutive quarters, averaging a growth rate of 1.5 per cent.

Lifetime ban from U.S. travel for Canadian marijuana investor

There were concerns this would happen, and it has, again.

A Canadian investor in the cannabis industry has been permanently banned from entering the U.S. He is the second such investor to receive a lifetime ban from the U.S.

In May, a Vancouver-based venture capitalist Sam Znaimer, an investor in some U.S. cannabis startups, was stopped by U.S border agents, and was also barred for life. Since October, recreational use of cannabis was made legal, adding to the already legal medicinal cannabis market. Thousands of Canadians have jumped into the new rapidly expanding and lucrative industry, from executives, to workers, to investors.

Worst may be yet to come for cannabis execs, pot users looking to cross Canada-U.S. border, experts say

A month into legalization of recreational cannabis, lawyers bracing for a spike in Canadians banned from U.S.

Marijuana has been legal in Canada for a month already, but immigration lawyers and cannabis executives say when it comes to getting into the United States, the worst may be yet to come.

As Canadians get used to the fact that cannabis is no longer against the law in their country, some experts fear they will forget the perils that past and present marijuana use still poses for those seeking to cross the Canada-U.S. border.

Henry Chang, a Toronto-based immigration lawyer, says he's bracing for a spike in cases of people who end up being banned outright from entering the U.S. for owning up to using pot.

2 Canadian cannabis stocks with the most to lose from Ontario’s retail regulations

As it currently stands, consumers looking to purchase legal marijuana in Ontario are limited to the online Ontario Cannabis Store. However, that is set to change in April once store locations are permitted to sell cannabis-based products. Applications for retail licenses will open on December 17. Some licensed cannabis producers (LPs) focused on vertical integration have made preemptive investments in retail networks to gain a first mover advantage. Unfortunately, on November 14, new retail regulations brought some bad news: the Ontario government announced that retail licenses will not be issued to corporations if more than 9.9% of its ownership is controlled by one or more licensed marijuana producers or their affiliates.
