Edible pot and protein wars to shake up food industry

Sylvain Charlebois, a professor of food distribution and policy, said much of the processing industry has stood on the sidelines waiting to see the federal regulatory framework for edible cannabis, but he expects that companies will soon start looking to see if there is a fit with their products.

“I don’t think people appreciate how complicated things are going to become in 2019 when edibles will become legal,” he said.

The beverage industry, particularly beer, has been the most proactive in exploring this area, he said.

The federal government released proposed guidelines for edible marijuana in late December, setting up a 60-day consultation period, but a key recommendation would prohibit the sale of cannabis-infused booze.

5 U.S.-focused pot stocks that could make you rich

The marijuana industry recently put the finishing touches on what was its most defining year ever. In 2018, Canada became the first industrialized country in the world, and only the second country overall behind Uruguay, to legalize recreational cannabis. In doing so, Canada opened the door to billions of dollars in added annual sales and, more importantly, declared the legal pot industry a legitimate business model.

Junior Canadian Cannabis scintillating to start 2019—But can it last?

Junior Canadian cannabis stocks are red hot to start 2019—but can it last? While it’s obviously too early to draw conclusions, the dichotomy between the beginning of this year and last is quite pronounced.

Backtracking to begin 2018, almost everything went up in unitary fashion. Tier-1, mid-major, junior and micro-caps all rode the M&A wave sweeping the sector via Aurora Cannabis’hostile takeover bid of CanniMed Therapeutics. Newstrike Brands—the junior immersed in it all—rocketed up ↑526.78% in six sessions from January 2-9, 2018. The blow-off top the would soon follow would become the second iteration of the Canadian cannabis bubble.

Lottery for retail cannabis licences opening overnight

Any local businesses hoping to cash in on the upcoming retail cannabis industry will soon have their chance.

The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario will be opening up an application lottery system at 12:01 a.m. tomorrow morning.

The results are expected to be announced by next weekend.

The AGCO will only be giving out 25 licences in the lottery. The provincial government has said a widespread supply issue is the reason for the small number of available licences.

Many people's reaction to the news of legal marijuana shops is mixed. Some think it could be good for the community.

Legal supply scant, Canada pot dealers still busy on corner

The legal cannabis stores that opened in Montreal last fall still look pristine. Curious customers file in, but the shelves they peruse are often bare. Supplies are so short the stores are shuttered three days a week.

A few blocks from one outlet, though, a longtime pot dealer was receiving a stream of text alerts one afternoon this winter, a sign of booming business.

When the government opened Canada's official recreational-pot market on Oct. 17, it was banking on the idea that many users would prefer to buy legally and that the black market would quickly begin to fade. It says things seem on track, with "early reports of a 65 percent reduction for illegally sourced products," according to a spokesman for the minister in charge of the cannabis file.

The 5 top marijuana value stocks in 2019

The marijuana industry had what can only be described as an odd year in 2018. In one sense, it gained legitimacy like never before with Canada choosing to legalize recreational marijuana, and a handful of U.S. states also giving cannabis the green light in some capacity.

Then again, after years of big gains, marijuana stock investors weren't able to participate in this good news in 2018. Most pot stocks ended the year lower by a double-digit percentage, with some losing more than half of their value.

CBD to be used as a cure for PTSD?

Anxiety and stress follows you every single day and there are only a few exceptions when you are not stressed out? Better buy: Aurora Cannabis vs. Tilray

A war is raging within the confines of America's northern neighbor, Canada. A marijuana war. Canada's decision to legalize recreational marijuana use among adults last year sparked a flood of licensing applications to Health Canada to grow, sell, and perform research on cannabis. At the end of 2018, for example, the agency reported a whopping 132 companies with licenses already in hand to cultivate marijuana and several hundred more applications currently under review.

Legal marijuana industry toasts another banner year; more growth expected in 2019

The last year was a 12-month Champagne toast for the legal marijuana industry as the global market exploded and cannabis pushed its way further into the financial and cultural mainstream.

Liberal California became the largest legal U.S. marketplace, conservative Utah and Oklahoma embraced medical marijuana, and the U.S. East Coast got its first commercial pot shops. Canada ushered in broad legalization, and Mexico's Supreme Court set the stage for that country to follow.

U.S. drug regulators approved the first marijuana-based pharmaceutical to treat kids with a form of epilepsy, and billions of investment dollars poured into cannabis companies. Even main street brands like Coca-Cola said they are considering joining the party.
