Cannabis outlet in Niagara Falls, Ontario plans May opening

The Ontario-designated operator of a cannabis outlet in Niagara Falls said that he expects the store to open by early May.

Chris Bogart, Choom Cannabis president, said the store at 7555 Montrose Road is in “full construction mode.”

The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario designated the Vancouver-based Choom Cannabis the province-backed adult use and recreational marijuana retailer for Niagara Falls earlier this winter.

The store is in a strip plaza along a heavily-traveled thoroughfare.

A second Niagara regional cannabis retailer opened Monday in St. Catharines.

From pulp and paper to marijuana, the rebranding of Queens County

Queens County in Nova Scotia is embracing a new type of crop cultivation.

For decades, the forestry sector was the biggest employer in the area. But in 2012, the Bowater Mersey pulp mill was shut down and hundreds of people were suddenly out of a job.

Seven years later, there's a cannabis production facility on the former mill site and 50 people are working there.

Owner Aqualitas set up its operation in one of the old Bowater warehouses.

It's an investment that hasn't come cheaply.

The large warehouse is one of the newer buildings on the site, but it still cost $20 million to get it ready for cannabis production, says Aqualitas CEO MyrnaGillis.

Cannabis stocks tripped on Thursday after significant gains on Wednesday. While the majority of cannabis players have had a bumping 2019 when it comes to stock prices, concerns remain about what lies ahead.

The North American Marijuana Index, which tracks the top cannabis stocks in the US and Canada, dropped 1% to 305.61. The Horizons Marijuana Life Sciences Index ETF was down 0.7% at C$21.57.

B.C. eyes smaller pot growers to fight product shortage

B.C. has a marijuana shortage.

At least that’s the story with government-sanctioned cannabis products in the wake of the national legalization of marijuana last October.

“Supply is still very much an issue not just here but across the country,” B.C. Minister of Solicitor General and Public Safety Mike Farnworth said April 4. He said the province has been pushing for the addition of marijuana microproducers into the supply chain to ensure enough pot gets to market.

Supply issues began to plague market not long after legalization.

And doobie-desperate British Columbians can forget wandering down the street to the local dealer if that dealer’s become a neighbourhood nuisance.

These worst-performing pot stocks fell at least 20% in March

Marijuana stocks have been practically unstoppable since the year began. Through the first three months of the year, the Horizons Marijuana Life Sciences ETF, which holds around four dozen pot stocks of various weightings, had galloped higher by more than 50%.

However, March wasn't a particularly strong month for pot stocks. In fact, the aforementioned ETF, the first cannabis ETF to trade in Canada, wound up losing just over 2% (inclusive of a dividend distribution) in March.

Although last month saw most pot stocks tread water, a few -- six, to be exact -- ventured into the deep end of the pool and sunk like a stone. Listed from the bottom up, here are the worst-performing pot stocks of March.

Edmonton cannabis stores stocking seeds as first legal growing season approaches

The legalization of cannabis last October included the option for private citizens to grow plants at home, but seeds weren’t available from distributors in Alberta until last month. Seeds are now available through Fire and Flower Cannabis online and at their location in Sherwood Park as well as at Nova Cannabis in Edmonton.

Jayden Colwell, a first-time grower, expects to get eight ounces worth of smokable marijuana once he harvests the plants he’s growing in his Calgary home. “If you can get a tomato plant to grow, you can get a cannabis plant to grow,” said Colwell. “They call it weed for a reason, it’s fairly easy.”

10 medical marijuana stocks to cure your portfolio

Invariably, no other investment class generates as much interest and controversy as marijuana stocks. Within a generation, public sentiment toward legalization shifted dramatically from strongly opposed to mostly supportive. This is largely due to demographics, as the more progressive millennials replace older Americans in positions of influence.
