Hemp 101: Everything you need to know about hemp

Canadian farmers have been growing hemp, an industrial variety of cannabis, for food like seed and fiber for clothing for two decades. But until last October, cannabidiol (CBD) — a cannabinoid compound found in the flowering portion of the plant that has been touted as an anti-inflammatory, anti-anxiety agent and other cure-all — couldn’t legally be extracted, processed or sold to consumers.

Canada’s Cannabis Act changed that last year, making it legal for hemp farmers to sell CBD-rich biomass to licensed processors and add to Canada’s inventory of CBD, which was previously supplied solely by medical cannabis cultivators.

2 cannabis stocks to watch this week

The marijuana stock market has shifted dramatically over the past few years. In that time, cannabis stocks have climbed to new heights, with the industry moving even closer to the future. Projections for the industry show the market reaching the triple-digit billions by the next decade or so. Although this might be a high expectation, even if the industry reached half that amount of growth, it would be very substantial.

Mixed reactions to U.S. move to ban flavoured e-cigarettes

A potential ban on flavoured e-cigarettes in the U.S. is a welcome step towards greater regulation of vaping products, says the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit.

“It’s encouraging to see federal governments start to have those types of conversations,” said Eric Nadalin, a manager in the WECHU’s health promotion department.

“Certainly, the concern with flavoured e-cigarettes is their attractiveness to youths. It’s something that we do want to acknowledge and develop protections against.”

On Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a proposal for new enforcement policies by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that would effectively remove flavoured e-cigarettes from the U.S. vaping market.

Canadians are just not that into CBD oil

As Ottawa prepares to legalize edibles and concentrates later this year, Canadians interested in cannabis oils won’t have to line up for long.

new report by Health Canada shows that—contrary to most cannabis products—the country’s supply of oils appears to be outpacing demand. While dried cannabis sales climbed 4.7 percent in June 2019 compared to the previous month, sales of cannabis oils dropped by 2.1 percent.

Why pot's illicit history is making it so hard for companies to get patents in the legal cannabis era

When Canopy Growth Corp. announced a plan to acquire cannabis researcher Ebbu Inc. for US$330 million last October, it touted the company’s intellectual property as the primary reason for the deal, mentioning it five times in the short press release.

A year later, Canopy is struggling to turn that intellectual property into patents. One of Ebbu’s first applications was rejected twice by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. When it was then narrowed significantly in a renewed attempt at approval, it was rejected a third time.

Finding the perfect cannabis dose: Where are we today?

The perfect dose is no one-trick pony. A combination of technologies, all working together, is what may finally crack the dosing code.

It’s no secret that the “perfect dose” has long been among the most sought-after requests of cannabis connoisseurs and medical advocates. While legalization blooms, dose control becomes an even more important hurdle to overcome as new markets open and new customers cast a curious eye on the plant. But historically, it has been difficult if not impossible to ensure a consistent dosing experience with cannabis. But that may all be changing.

How cannabis and CBD can help eliminate the stigma around mental illness

With marijuana use and mental health both wildly stigmatized, perhaps there are solutions in place that are as simple as having a conversation.

Millions of Americans are coping with mental health issues. Often undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, those who suffer in silence with mental illness issues often remain silent due to the stigmatization that shrouds depression, anxiety, and other psychiatric disorders.
