With edibles coming to brick-and-mortar shops in mid-December, users are looking to get high without the smoke.

But when choosing edibles, users will want to pay attention to whether the product has CBD or THC, two compounds with very different effects.

CBD

CBD, the non-psychoactive component within cannabis has been widely touted for its medical benefits to help people with, among other conditions, chronic pain. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports CBD is not physically addictive.

As Legalization 2.0 brings a wave of cannabis edibles and extracts to Canada’s store shelves later this year, Manitoba is taking impending arrivals very seriously. The province has stated its intention to make the public consumption of the drug in all its forms illegal, even if a tweak to legislation is required, the Times-Colonist reported.

A “limited quantity” of unlicensed cannabis was grown inside a Niagara, Ont. facility that Quebec-based Hexo Corp. acquired from Newstrike Brands Inc. earlier this year, with a “tiny” amount of that pot entering the market, the company’s chief executive said.

In a release late Friday, Hexo said once the company discovered that unlicensed cannabis was being cultivated in “Block B,” a room inside a building formerly owned and operated by Newstrike Brands, it immediately “ceased cultivation and production activities” in the room and notified federal regulators. Hexo acquired Newstrike Brands in March for $263 million.

Biome Grow Inc. has announced that P.E.I. Cannabis has approved the sale of cannabis products supplied by Biome’s wholly-owned Nova Scotia-based subsidiary, Highland Grow Inc. 

Highland Grow’s products, currently sold in five provinces, will now be available in all four Atlantic provinces, as well as Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Biome continues to grow its commercial footprint since beginning commercial sales of cannabis in January 2019. According to a press release, the company's management is expected to share its plans for expanding its commercial and production footprint to additional Canadian provinces in the months ahead.

If there’s a lesson that Canada’s pot industry can take from a devastating week that saw the country’s largest producers post massive losses amid waves of product returns and piles of excess inventory, it might be this: understand your market first, sell your product later.

And with cannabis 2.0 looming, there isn’t much time to learn it.

“Any company that’s looking to make a product for cannabis 2.0 should wait six months to see what comes out in the market,” said Narbe Alexandrian, president and CEO of Canopy Rivers, the venture capital arm of Canopy Growth Corp.
