Southwest baggage handlers accused of running marijuana smuggling ring

Baggage handlers working for Southwest Airlines out of the Oakland airport, have been accused of running a marijuana ring, according to the Drug Enforcement Agency.

A total of 14 people were charged in the Northern District of California for criminal conspiracy. Three of them — Kenneth Wayne Fleming, 32; Keith Ramon Mayfield, 34; and Michael Herb Videau, 28 — were Bay Area natives working as baggage handlers for the airline.

According to the DEA, the handlers carried luggage and backpacks filled with marijuana into the Oakland airport, then handed them off to passengers who had gone through the regular TSA screening. (Baggage handlers and several other airport employees are not required to go through screenings.) The passengers then flew with the drugs to other cities, including New Orleans, Louisiana, and Little Rock, Arkansas, according to The Guardian.
