First Look at the Smokin' Gun, Colorado's Next Major Marijuana Tourist Attraction

The forty-foot-high Willie Nelson statue has yet to appear on the edge of Colorado Boulevard — but that could only be a matter of time.

Because otherwise, the construction crew is putting the finishing touches on what promises to soon become one of metro Denver’s top tourist attractions: The Smokin’ Gun.

Yes, it’s a recreational marijuana store — but not just any recreational marijuana store.

For starters, this store is in Glendale, which means it can stay open until midnight — unlike Denver pot shops just across the street, which must close at 7 p.m.

Story highlights

  • New field grows marijuana legally for approved medical use
  • Public approval of marijuana has shifted in Chile
  • 86% of Chile's populace approves of medical use marijuana

There are thousands of green, leafy, marijuana plants as far as the eye can see at different stages of growth. But this is not a clandestine field of pot in the mountains of northern Mexico, guarded by gunmen on the payroll of a drug cartel. Pot’s Barrier to Legit Banking

Legal weed outlets, flush in cash, struggle to find financial institutions

There is an old jest that says the fastest way for a business to run off its customers is to adhere to the motto, “In God we trust; all others must pay cash.” But for Kimberly Cargile, director of the East Sacramento medical marijuana dispensary, A Therapeutic Alternative, cash and carry is her only option. And it really is no laughing matter.

“We’ve had quite the difficulty getting access to banking,” she says. “We have to pay all of our bills and our taxes in cash. Even getting change from the bank is tough, because the cash we have on hand is kept in the safe with the medicine [cannabis] and when you get it to the bank, it smells of that so the bank becomes very suspicious.”

Chicago marijuana dispensaries could have less-strict security

Medical marijuana dispensary owners in Chicago would be spared the requirement of hiring security guards to be on-site around the clock in a move aldermen framed as a way to help drive down costs.

The City Council Finance Committee approved the amendment Wednesday, paving the way for the full council to vote next month on the plan to require guards at the dispensaries only when they're open for business.

Sponsor Ald. Edward Burke, 14th, said since the dispensaries opened last year, they haven't made as much money as some thought they would.

Watch: Should Colorado legalize marijuana events?

Colorado regularly hosts big marijuana-themed events, but it remains illegal to sell pot in any location other than a licensed store.

One state lawmaker hopes to change that by creating a new kind of license to allow pot to be lawfully sold (and possibly consumed) on-site at special events only open to people over the age of 21.

“Amendment 64 asked us to regulate marijuana like alcohol,” said bill sponsor Rep. Dominick Moreno (D-Commerce City.) “The bill creates the exact same special use permit process that we already have for alcohol.”
